Description

ACRYLITE® sheet must be adequately supported and clamped to prevent flexing or vibration during the cutting operation. The material should also be placed as close to the fly cutter as possible to reduce the distance the cutter has to travel. By keeping on the film we include in all of our acrylic sheets for sale, you reduce the possibility of creating avoidable scratches on the surface of the acrylic. If you do create scratches on your acrylic, don’t panic! Because we’ve also written a guide which covers how to remove them! Several drill bit geometries are described below that can be used with success, although most do not leave the inside diameter of the hole with a smooth finish. These bits require the same considerations for support behind the sheet and for cooling as previously reviewed for twist drills bits. However, for added convenience, you might want to choose a drill bit that comes as a set. This is because you will get the tools in different sizes. Always a trusted name in the power equipment, this CRL drill bit is made with quality in mind. Simply put, it is manufactured from high-quality steel to provide better longevity and protection from wear.

Whether you’re a DIY hobbyist or a professional contractor, having the best drill bit for plexiglass is crucial. Be sure to follow the manufacturer’s safety recommendations for equipment and materials used with ACRYLITE® sheet. IPR (inches per revolution) - the amount of IPR material being removed per revolution of the drill bit, also referred to as chip load. The SFM and IPR cannot be directly set on manually operated drilling equipment. However, SFM and IPR data can be used to determine proper settings for spindle rotation speed in RPM (revolutions per minute), and feed rate in IPM (inches per minute). If the optimum SFM and IPR are known, then the settings can be determined using the following equations:Therefore, a drill bit with a 90-degree point angle is likely to provide fast and neat drilling than its 60-degree counterpart. Acrylic is a remarkably strong thermoplastic which can withstand heat, impact, and shattering. Despite its status as plastic, acrylic sheets boast high clarity comparable to glass, only at a far cheaper price point. This makes acrylic an efficient material for windows, display cases, and greenhouse glazing. Not only is acrylic UV-resistant, and thus repels discolouration and provides fantastic thermal insulation, but acrylic is highly versatile, and can be bent, molded, shaped, and drilled. Masking tape will help to provide an extra barrier while you drill acrylic, which will prevent the teeth from damaging their surface. Appropriate drilling conditions are a combination of both spindle rotation speed (RPM) and feed rate (IPM). Two parameters are usually employed for determining these. They are: This feature varies from one drill bit to another. Some tools have a 60-degree point angle while others have 90-degrees.

Drill bits suitable for drilling into plastic

So, to ensure you invest in the best drill bits, below are some of the features you might need to consider. Drill Bit Material Air or liquid coolants should be used whenever possible. Coolants reduce generated heat, and therefore improve hole quality. In certain hole depths and sizes, coolants are necessary to prevent melting. As a general rule, coolants should be used when the depth of the hole (H) exceeds bit diameter (D) (e.g. for D=0.250", a coolant should be used for H>0.250"). Coolants should also be used for holes greater than or equal to 1/2" in diameter (D ≥1/2"). Plexiglass is a clear plastic material that is commonly used in place of glass because it’s lightweight and also extremely durable. Brad Point Bit (1/8" to 1") - this design is similar to a twist drill with a modified tip similar to a spade bit with spurs. It has an advantage over a spade bit because it has a helical flute design which will pull out chips.

If you drill acrylic at high speed, you increase the risk of mistakes like warping and splitting. When the drill bit rotates slower, you have more time to react and have a better chance at drilling perfectly. The recommended process to drill acrylic is very simple! All you need to do is set your slightly-worn drill bit to low and gently press on the drill to push it through the surface. The drill should sink through the material, and if it doesn’t, a higher setting is required. You should allow the drill to continue turning while you lift it out of the hole so as not to cause unnecessary resistance.

Drilling Acrylic: Tips and Techniques | The Plastic People

Once you have all the recommended equipment on hand, it's time to start drilling. Some tips that we at Sheet Plastics have compiled to achieve the best results include: On top of that, it boasts a diamond dust coating to help you achieve sharper cuts with much more ease. In this section, we're going to explain different materials of nail drill bits. These four materials are the most common: Mandrel/Sanding band, Carbide bits, Ceramic bits, and Diamond bits. ACRYLITE® sheet is a combustible thermoplastic. Precautions should be taken to protect this material from flames and high heat sources. ACRYLITE® sheet usually burns rapidly to completion if not extinguished. The products of combustion, if sufficient air is present, are carbon dioxide and water. However, in many fires sufficient air will not be available and toxic carbon monoxide will be formed, as it will when other common combustible materials are burned. We urge good judgement in the use of this versatile material and recommend that building codes be followed carefully to assure it is used properly. Diamond bits can be derived from both natural or synthetic means and are the hardest bits available. They are used to remove the built-up product by scratching it off, but they create more dust and friction compared to the previously mentioned bits, and therefore, more heat. They also won’t rust after being disinfected. Most of cuticle drill bits are made of diamond.
