Somasundaram, A., Laxton, A.W., & Perrin, R.G. (2013, September 20). The clinical features of periorbital ecchymosis in a series of trauma patients [Abstract]. Injury, 45(1), 203-205 The auditory bulla on a raccoon skull is larger than that found on an opossum skull. Compared to a fox skull, a raccoon’s nose is shorter and wider. How big is a raccoon skull? In Western culture, several autobiographical novels about living with a raccoon have been written, mostly for children. The best-known is Sterling North's Rascal, which recounts how he raised a kit during World War I. Wright, T. and Lundelius. E. 1963. Post-Pleistocene raccoons from central Texas and their zoogeographic significance. Pearce-Sellards Ser. Texas. Mem. Mus. 2:1-21.Raccoons are best known for their washing behavior that is commonly observed in zoos but is not as common in wild free ranging raccoons. This behavior is better described as a “feeler” instead of a “washer”, because they will rub dry and wet food together and also observed rubbing their hands together without food present (Whitney 1933). Other sources state that the wetter the food the more sensitive their forepaws are, therefore that is why they tend to dip their food in water (Schwartz 1981). Raccoons need only a permanent source of water, a den and an average amount of food. Dens tend to be hollow trees usually large and dry but they don’t add nesting material. Dens are typically made in maple or elm trees of 2-20 meters in size (Zelveloff 2002). They can also habit in attics and chimneys of abandoned farm houses or even occupied houses. Food is the least important part of equation to live. They also have the advantage to live in rural and urban areas, since they have adapted to survive in close proximity with humans (Hoffmeister 1989). This procedure is carried out to improve the function of the nose or change its form to make it more appealing. Depending on the extent of the surgery, it is possible for rhinoplasty to cause raccoon eyes. Other causes Pereira, V. G., Jacinto, M., Santos, J., & Tribolet de Abreu, T. (2014, August 19). Gompper, "A serology and fecal parsitology survey of the critically endangered pygmy raccoon ( Procyon pygmaeus)," J Wildlife Diseases 41(2005): 615–617. The earliest known Procyon was from the upper Pliocene of North America (Simpson 1945). Some post-Pleistocene remains of raccoons from central Texas resemble living P. lotor form the northern USA, indicating that earlier they had a much wider range (Wright and Lundelius 1963). Opossum skulls are small, however, because of their large pointy face, they have many features. The skull is around 4.3 inches in length and around 2 inches in height. The skull has an orbit, zygomatic arch, sagittal crest, canines, Incisors, and mandible. Opossum skull examples. Opossum Skull Identification With respect to these three different modes of life prevalent among raccoons, Hohmann called their social structure a "three-class society". [141] Samuel I. Zeveloff, professor of zoology at Weber State University and author of the book Raccoons: A Natural History, is more cautious in his interpretation and concludes at least the females are solitary most of the time and, according to Erik K. Fritzell's study in North Dakota in 1978, males in areas with low population densities are solitary as well. [142] The common raccoon ( Procyon lotor) is the largest extant species of the procyonid family and also the most widely distributed. P. lotor also goes by such common names as "North American raccoon," [5] "northern raccoon," [22] the "raccoon," [5] and colloquially as "coon." [5]

Baby opossums are around the size of a peanut. This means that their skulls are very tiny and fragile. When they are young, they stay in their mother’s pouch, where they feed on the teets. Later when they get a little larger and older, they come out of the pouch to learn the ropes of surviving in the wild. Eyes tend to be round in shape to facilitate night vision. Eyes are large and convex, which allows for bright images to project into the retina. The retina contains fewer cones therefore raccoons tend to be color blindness or possibly have “color weak” vision. It may be difficult to detect colors but they can detect a difference in brightness. Eyes have also been described as extremely piercing because of red tinge they can contain. Binocular vision is possible since the eyes are positioned forward on the cranium but they have poor distance vision (Zelveloff 2002). Raccoons are sometimes raised as pets, although they may act unpredictably and aggressively and it can be quite difficult to teach them to obey and understand commands. [25] Some states in the United States do not allow keeping wild animals as pets, and some states require an exotic pet permit. [7] H. Jacobs, Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl: Written by Herself (New York: Barnes & Noble Classics, 2005, ISBN 1593082835).

Fractures to the face and other head injuries can cause raccoon eyes, although you may not notice them right away. It can take 1 to 3 days after the injury for the dark color to appear. Raccoons are thought to be color blind or at least poorly able to distinguish color, though their eyes are well-adapted for sensing green light. [116] [117] [118] Although their accommodation of 11 dioptre is comparable to that of humans and they see well in twilight because of the tapetum lucidum behind the retina, visual perception is of subordinate importance to raccoons because of their poor long-distance vision. [119] [120] [121] In addition to being useful for orientation in the dark, their sense of smell is important for intraspecific communication. Glandular secretions (usually from their anal glands), urine and feces are used for marking. [122] [123] [124] With their broad auditory range, they can perceive tones up to 50–85 kHz as well as quiet noises, like those produced by earthworms underground. [125] [126] Intelligence This process of removing grease can take weeks to months, depending on how dirty the skull is. The next step is to now whiten the skull. To do so: Raccoon eyes themselves do not often require treatment. Doctors will focus on treating the cause, which should allow the raccoon eyes to go away without any assistance. To identify an opossum skull, you should look for the long mandible, 50 teeth, and the zygomatic arch on the sides of the skull. These all contribute to the unique shape of the opossum’s skull. They have one of the longest skulls for a mammal of their size. This makes the opossum skull identification a little easier since they have a very noticeable structure. Baby Opossum Skull Raccoons have a dual cooling system to regulate their temperature; that is, they are able to both sweat and pant for heat dissipation.> [5] The subgenus Procyon has many distinguishing characters when comparing it to the other subgenus Euprocyon; such characters as long pelage, presence of under fur along with grayish out surface of the forearms and thighs (Goldman 1950). Other characters have also been used to distinguish between the two subspecies like narrower, sharper claws and tending to be stronger allowing them to be an arboreal species. Also, the molarform teeth are not as adapted for crushing, compared to Euprocyon (Goldman 1950).
