Description
We tested the AIRO balance bike with three young testers. A barely 2-year-old tester still in 18-months clothes, a three-year-old in 3T clothes, and an almost 4-year-old in size 5 clothes. All three riders had a very different experience on the bike, which isn’t surprising considering our three tested varied greatly in size and skill levels! I'm sure many of our readers would be surprised if an article about the best balance bikes didn't feature an Islabike. However, opinion is split on the Rothan. Weighing just 2.95kg starting your little one out on their cycling journey is easier for them than ever before! Thanks to the AIRO’s incredibly lightweight, ultra-hard-wearing magnesium alloy frame they can effortlessly propel themselves along. Highly recommend Frog bikes. Nice and light which is what they need. We’ve had quite a few now as the children have grown. My son had a fantastic lightweight plastic balance bike first of all but I can’t remember the brand. Then we discovered Frog bikes and have had those ever since." (Tried and tested by Mumsnet user Jerble) Our verdict
The Hoy Napier is the stuff of a toddler’s Olympics dreams with its sleek, minimalist BMX design, chunky wheels and small aluminium frame. Available in red, blue, and yellow this is a great looking balance bike that will see most children through from the age of two to four. But which balance bike is best? There are lots of different options out there from cheap and cheerful to high-spec and built-to-last. If you only have one child and know that you’ll only need a balance bike for a short time then a cheaper option might be best, but if you have more than one child it can be worth investing in something pricier that can be passed from child to child. A lot of balance bikes also have great resale value so that’s worth keeping in mind too. You want to make sure your bike doesn’t weigh more than 30 percent of your child’s bodyweight so that they're not forced to work too hard or forced to become frustrated. 3kg tends to be a good marker for most toddlers. Weighing just 2.95kg and featuring proper air-filled tyres, here’s the lowdown on our levitatingly light balance bike. What is a balance bike? A more aggressive rider by nature (for his size), the AIRO delivered as he went down curbs, ramps and easily weaved in and out of the leaf piles in the neighborhood. From the air tires to the cushioned saddle, he was right at home on the AIRO.
We have a Hornit balance bike for DS and he absolutely adores it. I do too because it’s super super light for when I inevitably have to end up carrying it sometimes.” (Loved by Mumsnet user Rainallnight) Our verdict The wider set handlebars of the woom allow her to extend her arms significantly out past her shoulders as compared to the Strider. With wider set hands, minor movements on the wider handlebars won’t affect the overall steering and control of the bike as much as movements on a narrower bar. Narrower handle bars lead to more twitchy steering. Training wheels, also called stabilisers, have been used for decades – and they worked for most of us in our early years (as far as we can remember…).If you've enjoyed reading this article, please do sign up for our newsletter- we'll keep up updated when we have new articles which may be of interest. The Rothan is their balance bike offering - it's suitable for children with an inside leg of 30cm. The attention to detail is superb on every Islabikes product, and you'll smile every time you see the paintwork or lift up the frame (3.2kg). Age range: Two to four years old (85 to 110cm tall with an inside leg of 40cm minimum) | Weight: 3.8kg | Wheel size: 12 inch | Tyres: Pneumatic What we loveAnd now, just in time for Christmas, Hornit is branching out to launch their very first lightweight balance bike – the Hornit AIRO. Training wheels hold the bike in a rigid, upright position – so when a child learns to steer with training wheels on the bike, they’re actually learning to steer a tricycle. One extra the AIRO does offer, though, is a lifetime warranty on the frame and fork – definitely a big plus point if you're planning on more little cyclists, or you're considering passing the bike onto a family member or friend afterwards. Overall Minimimal clearance between the ground on the bottom of the post when the seat is set to its minimum height (shorter seat post now available through Hornit to prevent this issue) Age range: 18 months - 4 years | Weight: Not stated | Wheel size: 12 inch | Tyres: Airless What we love
Above all else, the bike needs to fit to be comfortable. Balance bikes at the smallest end of the scale can have 10-inch wheels, and at the largest end, you’re usually looking at 20-inch wheels. Kidvelo also make larger 14" and 18" wheel balance bikes which convert into pedal bikes, which are a great idea if your child is at that in-between stage and not quite ready for a full pedal bike yet. Or second, 39″ tall 3-year-old tester in 3T clothes also had a great experience on the AIRO. Already confident on a balance bike, he hopped on the AIRO and began zipping down the driveway and around the sidewalk. With a smile on his face, he ran faster and glided longer than he previously could on his own balance bike. The AIRO was well-loved and performed like a champ for him! Newly 2-year-old and quite petite in size (36″ tall), the AIRO was a great fit for our youngest tester in size 18-months pants. Although he has a heavier and slightly larger balance bike at home, he had been hesitant to ride (or even walk it) for months. Not giving up, his parents continued to encourage him to ride, but to no success.

At Cycling Weekly, we have a dedicated team of testers, whose job it is to ride bikes and review equipment. That means that we have an in-depth knowledge of all the latest bike tech and trends and can bring you a detailed, insightful analysis of the pros and cons of each bike and what's it's really like to ride. Quality of build: Make sure that the bike you end up with is sturdy and finished to a high standard. This could indicate how well it’s built, how durable it is and how much maintenance it needs. But would the AIRO win the yellow jersey in a race to the top, or crash out in the first stage? Our First Look reviewer, a mum of three, got to find out. Who's it for?
