One of the best aspects of Norway’s outdoor life is the proximity of hiking trails to all major cities, even Oslo. This makes short hikes and day trips a breeze, no matter where you're staying. As bad as these pictures look, these are not the actions of true wild campers. For those of us who love the outdoors, the idea of anyone polluting the landscape like this is beyond belief. But, like it or not, the reality is that everyone will be tarred with the same brush. That means it’s more important than ever that we all act responsibly when we’re camping out in the wild.A greener alternative is the Bottleshower, a nice piece of lightweight kit that allows you to convert a plastic drinks bottle into a shower. Or maybe just take a dip in a lake or river! Look out for wildlife signs on nearby roads to be aware of any animal habitats in the area, particularly in mating or nesting seasons. But at its heart, camping is supposed to be about simplicity and getting closer to nature. That’s what wild camping offers, and in these unsettling times, that’s never been more important. Is wild camping legal? Water is heavy to carry so you will probably want to be camped near a water source. If you are aiming to camp on a peak (only recommended on a day with little wind), you can pitch a small tent on the peak of Great End and also Great Knott. You’ll be rewarded with some spectacular views! The number-one rule for responsible wild camping is ‘leave no trace’: your camping spot should look exactly the same when you leave it as on arrival. However, while the right to roam law allows visitors to pitch a tent on public land, the same does not apply with a vehicle such as a motorhome or camper van.To state the obvious: it’s going to be cold, especially in a roof tent. Do you have any heating in your car? Buy a tent that’s as lightweight but strong as you can afford; a tent weighing 2kg or under should be fine to carry. Sleeping bag While you may feel like you’re roughing it while wild camping, you’re likely to want to bring some toiletries along with you. A small washbag is perfect for bringing along a toothbrush, toothpaste, hand sanitiser and anything else.
