Although the film wasn’t unanimously loved by critics, many of them were quick to sing the movie’s praises. It's in the HDR, WCG and here Dolby Vision implication that the magic really happens though, with so much depth to the shadows, such fabulous handling of the contrast, and rich tones giving life to the ornately intricate settings and lavish accoutrements. I love Gary Oldman’s take on the ancient monster with Hopkins turning in a devilishly delightful Van Helsing. com is an Introducer Appointed Representative of Pay4Later Limited, trading as Deko, which is authorised and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority (FRN 728646). In addition, the Golden Globes completely ignored it, which paved the way for the film potentially coming up short on Oscar nominations morning, too.

There’s a music video for the Annie Lennox song, “Love Song for a Vampire,” that plays over the film’s end credits, and a behind-the-scenes piece that has relatively little overlap with the making-of featurette on the Blu-ray disc that’s included in this set. Similarly, in Sound Effects Editing, the other two nominees “Aladdin” and “Under Siege” didn’t pose much of a threat. Silent movies, shadow puppets, back projection, forced perspective, models, make-up, technicolor, cross-fades - it's so very dense with sheer craft. In the first of two commentary tracks, the always voluble Francis Ford Coppola goes into every aspect of the film’s creation, covering his visual inspirations, reasons for shooting entirely in the studio, keeping the special effects practical, relations with cast and crew members, and the film’s overarching themes.Black levels are off-the-charts fabulous, the miniatures and elaborate sets all look stunning, and the thirty-year-old classic has simple never looked any better.

Another reason some might not have predicted too many Oscar noms for “Bram Stoker’s Dracula” was the academy’s aversion to recognizing horror films, and that was certainly the case for previous “Dracula” adaptations.Dracula was shot with all manner of cinematic techniques as already detailed, including rear projection, multiple exposures, miniature effects, compositing images with a forced perspective, matte paintings, front projection and reverse motion. When the charismatic Dracula meets Mina (Winona Ryder), a young woman who appears as the reincarnation of his lost love, the two embark on a journey of romantic passion and horror.

All of this allows Coppola to bring something new and delightfully decadent to the material, akin to the bottle of absinthe Dracula and Mina share, even if Bram Stoker’s Dracula, like the Stoker novel, ultimately reconciles itself with the status quo. We reviewed the 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray release of Bram Stoker's Dracula on an LG 55B7 Dolby Vision 4K Ultra HD OLED TV with a Panasonic DP-UB820EB-K Dolby Vision HDR10+ 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray player. I was ten years old when this film came out and I’ve had a love of classic monster movies for as long as I could remember, and this was something I desperately wanted to see. The cinematographer, Michael Ballhaus, gets into the spirit so completely he always seems to light with shadows.Meanwhile, Mina’s journey finds her developing many of the same erotic tendencies as Lucy under Dracula’s tutelage, the ramp up in her seductiveness once again mirrored in the costumes that she wears.

Gold Derby editors and Experts Christopher Rosen and Joyce Eng are here break down all the snubs and surprises. To celebrate this film’s 30th Anniversary, Sony curses physical media fanatics with a new two-disc 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray SteelBook release. It raised a few eyebrows in Hollywood for the director of classic films like The Godfather, Apocalypse Now, and The Outsiders to sign on to direct a vampire movie. Anthony Hopkins soon after received more Oscar nominations for “The Remains of the Day,” “Nixon” and “Amistad,” and later won a second trophy for “The Father” in 2021. In keeping with the operatic and overly histrionic approach to the material, the film’s performances are almost uniformly dialed up to 11. Francis Ford Coppola's lavishly crafted interpretation of Bram Stoker's classic novel Dracula is an audacious work of cinematic art, charmingly flawed by a couple of off-kilter performances, but equally so damn outlandish in its own flavoursome way that you don't care, particularly with a career-defining Oldman centre-stage.
