The regulations also bring in a new certification scheme (known as ‘Ready to Burn’) for manufactured solid fuels that are deemed ‘smokeless’. We would recommend using Kiln dried or well seasoned logs on a regular basis but we found the coffee logs to be a nice alternative should you fancy something different. The little Hobbit has stepped up to the challenge, providing heat to a very large area, about twenty eight foot by twenty four foot with a high ceiling of about eighteen foot, keeping the room reasonably warm, warm enough for us not to use cardigans! Smouldering fuel to try to extend burn time is bad for your stove, flue and the environment due to unburned particulate matter in the smoke. Coffee logs are made from used coffee grounds that are recycled, dried and compacted into a log shape (think of the coffee puck left in your espresso portafilter, stacked on top of eachother).

Eco Coffee™ is a Zero Waste process itself, but also actively reduces the amount of waste to landfill, making the whole process WASTE NEGATIVE! By recycling spent coffee grounds into Coffee Logs, we save 80% on CO2e emissions compared to the grounds being sent to landfill. As a result, it helps UK households save money on heating by lowering their overall fuel consumption. It is estimated that using coffee grounds as a fuel generates 80% fewer emissions than if they had gone to landfill. Judged by an esteemed panel, including the likes of Sir Richard Branson and Tyra Banks, Bio-Bean's unique proposition of turning coffee waste into an eco-friendly energy source resonated deeply. Join the Bio Bean revolution today, and experience how the power of biology and coffee can guide you to a fitter, healthier you.

We are in active discussions with DEFRA to support and advance the creation of this new testing methodology. Making your own coffee logs can help use up your waste coffee grinds that would otherwise end up in the bin. Founder Arthur Kay—who conceptualized Coffee Logs during his architectural studies at The Bartlett, UCL's Faculty of the Built Environment—envisioned a future where waste coffee grounds fuelled cities, buildings, and vehicles. If you're really into coffee and want to explore this subject further, here's how you can learn more about coffee. Thankfully, with Firemizer, no clumps were left and we were able to brush off the collected ash into the pan. All Lekto products are fully certified according to Defra’s Ready to Burn wood fuel quality certification scheme, ensuring that you're not only getting a quality product but also contributing to a sustainable environment.

The Hobbit has fitted neatly into the hearth vacated by the old gas back boiler (with a little cosmetic rendering) and never ceases to surprise us how much heat it can deliver to the point that the new condenser boiler is having an easy life, thereby saving us on gas bills too! The come in a lovely brown paper bag, 16 logs per bag and look cool enough to give to someone as a Christmas present! To accelerate the airflow I fully opened the air wheel and the new logs were again quick to produce a good flame and ended up producing very little ash. We’ve pulled together suggestions for some creative uses for coffee grounds from fertiliser to air fresheners there’s no limit to their use!By tackling the waste the industry creates at its destination, we are helping deliver a cleaner tomorrow. For step-by-step instructions, read this and bear in mind your DIY log is going to be more of a coffee slab than anything else (only industrial machinery is able to compress coffee into a solid log shape).
