At this point the whole tone of the book changes and it will depend on each reader's personal preferences whether they enjoy it or not. Suffice it to say that there is a satisfying conclusion to this intriguing and memorable story Hanne and Thea’s friendship is a miracle. Before, Hanne always felt apart from the local girls, but with Thea it all came easy. Suddenly she could imagine a future for herself, a happy one, by Thea’s side. In 1838, the Lutherans are given permission to emigrate to South Australia where they will be free to worship as they please. They embark on the long journey to Hamburg where they board a ship to take them to their new home. Their journey on board the Kristi is based on the real voyage of the Zebra (under the command of Captain Hahn who helped them buy land in the Barossa and for whom Hahndorf was named). With 199 people on board the ship and only 80 berths, the ship was horribly overcrowded and soon typhus became rampant, killing some on board. It’s at this point in the novel that the story takes an unexpected turn that will affect both Hanne and Thea’s future in the new colony. Lieutenant Rober Reem, USMC, Red and Charlie’s squad leader, would save lives but by falling on a grenade in the gun pit that was being overrun by the NK. He was awarded the Medal of Honor posthumously. We are also introduced along the way to a squad of Marines that join the Leyte for war games in Crete, and we later revisit their struggles as the Cold War threatens to become the Third World War. Christensen, the flight instructor who took Brown under his wing, was so torn up when he heard how Brown died that he decided to become a helicopter rescue pilot. He saved the lives of six pilots during the Korean War, but his daughter said he kept thinking of the one he couldn’t save: I appreciate that beyond the main characters, Devotion pays quiet tribute to the thousands of men who served in this war and the 37,000 that gave the ‘last full measure of devotion.’ As someone with very limited knowledge of this war, I was fascinated by the story of the heroics at the Chosin Reservoir--the US Marines’ finest hour.

Despite the inevitable Social Creature comparison, Devotion isn't quite as suspenseful or climactic, and its protagonists left less of an impression on me. Even so, I had a hard time putting this down; for a slow-moving story it never really loses momentum, and it has that 'need to know what happens next' quality that mercifully doesn't feel like a cop-out when nothing ever really happens. Therefore I went into this knowing little and excited to learn more about this lesser known but important event in world history... As the light faded, Hudner kept trying to free his friend while their squadron circled above, looking out for enemy troops. Many of these carrier airmen are identified in this story, including their method of flying together and how they protected each other. Also many factors relative to the war itself is included that I either didn’t know or didn’t understand their importance. This tale answered a lot of questions for me. This is Makos' second book, following on from A Higher Call. That one I described in a Goodreads review as a great book riddled with errors and typos. This one has fewer errors and no typos that I noticed, but it does have its own irritations.

When Lonnie and her husband James took on Elle as their nanny they opened doors to whole new world for her. As Elle had been struggling to make ends meet, she is now whisked into a world of fancy homes, vacations and parties that she would never have been privy to in "her world" outside of her job. As Lonnie welcomed her into their lives with open arms, she also gained a friend in her. She loaned her clothes, treated her to things that a normal employer what not. She made her a part of the family and saw her as a confidant and friend. Only when you understand the great mercy of God and begin receiving it are you more inclined to give mercy to others.
