Description

It's a popular activity among outdoor enthusiasts and often involves ticking off or "bagging" a defined list. Peak bagging, also known as hill bagging or fell bagging in the UK, is the practice of attempting to reach the summit of a collection of peaks, hills, or fells.

Next comes a steep climb to Scafell Pike’s summit, before looping back to the start via Esk Hause and Grains Gill. Peak Bagging: Wainwrights by Karen and Dan Parker features forty-five routes designed to efficiently link all 214 Wainwright fells. The routes are split into seven sections, reflecting Wainwrights seven Pictorial Guides, and to simplify logistics, all of the featured routes are circular with an emphasis on making practical links between the summits. It is possible that if you live local or have visited the Lake District over the years you may find yourself frequenting the same areas. It's very accessible from the motorway, so a lot of people stop there en route to somewhere else, or go there because it's easy to get to.Alfred Wainwright, a man spellbound by the majestic fells of the Lake District, poured his heart and soul into chronicling 214 unique summits.

Embrace the blend of past and present as you navigate the routes using this modern guide and Wainwright’s timeless pictorial guides for a well-rounded exploration of the Lake District’s beauty. As you conquer each of the 214 Wainwright fells, scratch them off to reveal a vibrant, colour-coded record of your Lake District adventures. What is interesting about this selection of Fells is that they were not chosen for their scale or grandeur… they were chosen because they were his favourites. Over fifty years ago, renowned British hillwalker and guidebook author Alfred Wainwright described 214 peaks in the English Lake District in his seven-volume illustrated Pictorial Guide to the Lakeland Fells.

The Wainwright Outlying Fells comprise 116 smaller hills and tops mentioned in the 1974 book 'The Outlying Fells of Lakeland' by Alfred Wainwright and published by The Westmorland Gazette. Wainwright's writing was both descriptive and beautiful, and his name remains synonymous with many of the best hikes in the Lake District today. This has caused much confusion on the part of authors attempting to produce a definitive list of peaks - particularly when at least 7 identical fells are given different names*, there are a number of 'nameless summits'* and not all of the tops mentioned in the chapters appear on the list towards the back of the book*. Collected together for no other reason than they were the favourites of Alfred Wainwright, a British walker, illustrator and author. Its peak is part of a horseshoe of fells formed by an inactive volcano and its prominent ridgeline of rocky crags and narrow cols makes it one of the most distinctive peaks in the country. Karen continues: "It's a good example of one of the fells that people probably wouldn't bother to go up if it wasn't a Wainwright.
