Last Secret of the Deverills by Santa Montefiore | Goodreads The Last Secret of the Deverills by Santa Montefiore | Goodreads

Daughters of Castle Deverill: Family secrets and enduring Daughters of Castle Deverill: Family secrets and enduring

Most of Montefiore’s novels touching, magical and remarkable as they are, are a combination of real life experiences/stories and some fiction. The stories, plots, and characters that she writes about from the first novel Meet Me Under Ombu Tree and the other novels that followed are a sum of her experiences. Most of the characters in the novels have to deal with many painful experiences that the author asserts are important as a nostalgic way of reliving the past and making sense of the present. Nonetheless, the books are written to touch people on a spiritual and emotional level even as they entertain. While her very first novel was set in Argentina, her preceding novels have been in Chile, France, and Italy, countries that tend to have the same herb scented, balmy, and warm breezes just like Argentina. She has also done one of her novels in the wild beaches of Connemara, Ireland for its melancholy, gothic, and haunting tone that were missing in the other novels.I came into The Daughters of Castle Deverill, the second book in a series written by established British author Santa Montefiore, having just read its predecessor, Songs of Love and War. Although it is not essential to have read the first book, Songs of Love and War, to enjoy The Daughters of Castle Deverill, I believe it enhanced my reading experience. It gave me a good handle on the characters and the scene that had been set. However, Montefiore does devote time in the Daughters of Castle Deverill in keeping her readers up to speed on her characters and their lives, which enables the book to also be read as a standalone novel. W]ith the Great Depression on the horizon, the childhood friends face further adversity, and once again show themselves to be hugely compelling characters. Montefiore . . . offers an insider’s look at the life of the aristocracy, writing with much skill and insight. Those of us hooked on the daughters of Ireland series will no doubt wait with bated breath for the next instalment of this intergenerational epic.” It is 1925 and Castle Deverill has burned to the ground. War and deception have divided the daughters of Ireland, but Celia vows to return her ancestral home to its former glory. Kitty raises a young family but longs for something more, and Bridie flourishes as a New York socialite consumed by revenge. Celia works to reunite her childhood friends and restore the place they once called home, but soon everything she knows is cast into doubt as the Great Depression looms. It follows the lives of the Solanas family living in the tumultuous years of political turmoil in Argentina. Sofia Solanas is the lead character, a proud, resourceful, wilful, spoilt daughter of Argentine nobility. She lives on an expansive ranch and has been brought up under the spiritual practices of the gauchos, and the time-honored traditions of her highborn parents. Everybody seems to love Sofia except for Anna, her Irish mother who visits her sense of inadequacy and alienation on her daughter. When Sofia gets into a steamy love affair that her mother believes would disgrace the family if it ever came out, she banishes Sofia to Europe. By sending her away, she inadvertently exiles the daughter not only from her soul mate for over a decade but also from her family.

Daughters of Castle Deverill | Book by Santa Montefiore

Currently I am thinking of nothing but these books. That says a lot. I love books that utterly consume you and draw you in so that you can think of nothing else. The Deverill family feel as close to me at the moment as some of my dearest friends. I find that I am silently routing for them to succeed and praying the outcome is a happy one!Fall in love with beloved bestselling author Santa Montefiore's epic tale of romance, secrets, family andfriendship. This is the third novel of the Deverill Chronicles. This saga actually begins in 1600’s when Maggie O’Leary puts a curse on the Deverills. Apparently the Deverill’s decided to build a castle on O’Leary land. We begin this sequel in 1939 with Martha Wallace who is coming from America to find her birth mother. Martha was adopted as an infant and went to America with her happy parents. What secrets she will discover. This book didn't grab me as much as the first two. It took me a while to get into it and I found it a bit slow at the start. Once I got going and met all the characters from the first two books the story took off. Then the last few chapters turned into mush for me. Everyone was forgiving everyone and for certain things I think would be hard to forgive. There was also a lot about God going on with this forgiveness that just annoyed me and a lot of tears. The second novel in the beloved Deverill Chronicles, perfect for everyone who loves Jojo Moyes, Rosamund Pilcher and Victoria Hislop.
