I was a fan of Ahlborn’s work prior to this, but this definitely seals the deal. I will read anything she writes! Shinn is one of my favorite writers, and although this isn’t my favorite of hers (that’s Mystic and Rider), it’s very, very good. There is a lot about their relationships in here and I was more horrified by that than the monsters! Snow can be magical, softly blanketing the landscape, making everything look beautiful and unreal. But snow and ice can also be dangerous and menacing, and in the hands of horror authors, cold weather can create an atmosphere of real terror. To send a truly memorable shiver up your spine, all that’s needed are some not-so-friendly creatures lurking among the snowdrifts…

Every time one of these popped up in a scene, I couldn’t help but feel a twinge of irritation. I think I speak for most people when I say that I want to read something new in the horror genre. Seeing all these tropes takes away the element of surprise and scare factor since you see it coming a mile away with its high beams on. Another frustration I had with this book is that everyone was Caucasian. I wish Ahlborn had incorporated BIPOC characters so we weren’t just reading about wealthy white kids partying in the woods. The dilemma makes as little sense as the solution. The best twist was that the Brandon timeline wasn't concurrent with the Jayla/Madeliene/Pietro timeline ; but it was good. While there are “bad guys” in the story, all of the characters are basically trying to do their best to save the city from the earthquakes and live according to what they see is right. The setting is an interesting one- somewhat steampunk with vehicles that run along an overhead grid, a variety of cultures, and competing gods. And I enjoyed the various low key romances. That said, the novel has several serious problems. The first of these is the uneven characterization. Shinn draws some nicely defined characters in Madeleine, Brandon, and Villette. Even Cody and Jayla have a few good moments which bring out their character, motivations, and feelings. But there it ends. Pietro, Shollo, Reese, Tivol, and a number of others are barely drawn.
