Since 2001, we've brought you uncompromising, candid takes on the world of film, music, television, video games, theater, and more. The clear upgrade over the Netflix version is getting a Dolby Atmos soundtrack here when the Netflix version only delivers a 5. Film clips and behind-the-scenes footage abound, and many members of the cast and crew, including De Niro, Pacino, Bobby Cannavale, Ray Romano, Anna Paquin, author Charles Brandt, casting director Ellen Lewis, producer Irwin Winkler, and cinematographer Rodrigo Prieto, discuss their characters, praise Scorsese, and examine the film's look, costumes, production design, and locations. Yet the degree to which Sheeran is an unreliable narrator, perhaps even to himself, is always debatable in the film, and not just because the Hoffa case has never been officially closed. The speckled grit of asphalt, slick contours of Frank's leather jacket, bits of dirt on the car windshield, soggy flakes in a cereal bowl, gleaming automobile chrome, mirror-like reflections, and costume and upholstery textures all jump off the screen.

Anatomy of a Scene"(HD, 5 minutes) - Scorsese comments about the structure, elements, tone, and subtext of a pivotal sequence in The Irishman for this installment of a popular feature that regularly appears in the The New York Times.Though at times he chews the scenery like a big juicy cigar, Pacino remains refreshingly in check most of the time, filing a finely tuned portrayal of a larger-than-life figure.

The Irishman on the Blu-ray Review: Martin Scorsese’s The Irishman on the

The way Scorsese photographs Sheeran through the opening reveals a man drained of all his perceived power, and distressingly content with the unholy mess he’s left behind. I still think motion is better on this Blu-ray (and I'm sure that is debatable), but in other areas the 4K streaming version still lookspretty damn good.

The two actors have additionally reached a point where bellowing self-parody and resting on laurels is de rigueur, the hope of a blazing last hurrah dissipating with every humdrum SNL appearance or cringe-inducing travesty like the “Dunkaccino” segment from Jack and Jill. Scorsese’s choice, in many of these early scenes, to expensively and time-consumingly de-age his principal cast members with digital technology has the strange effect of making Sheeran’s recollections seem that much more like an idealized fantasy that cannot hold.

At first I thought this would be the same as the In Conversation featurette that is available on Netflix, and while this uses a lot of the same material, it’s a different edit with some alternate material as well (and it runs a few minutes shorter).A beautiful transfer, excellent Dolby Atmos audio, and healthy array of supplements distinguish Criterion's Blu-ray presentation, which is well worth owning until a 4K UHD release comes along. On the flip side, Pesci plays a diminutive man who tries to remain invisible, and he easily steals the film with an understated, wonderfully nuanced, utterly revelatory performance that's the antithesis of his loudmouth, fast-talking, over-the-top work in both GoodFellas and Casino. Continuing their deal with Netflix, The Criterion Collection presents Martin Scorsese’s The Irishman on Blu-ray, delivering the film in its original aspect ratio of 1. Make no mistake, The Irishman is a true work of art, but its languorous pacing and talky script produce some draggy stretches and its excessive length ultimately dulls the story's power. The episode gets into his popularity amongst workers as well as his legal issues, and also talks a little bit about his relationship with Tony “Pro.

It’s a handsome looking package, staying in line with the previous Netflix titles Criterion has released. Criterion also includes a booklet (which features the title I Heard You Paint Houses) featuring an essay on the film by Geoffrey O’Brien. The presentation may not offer the clear upgrade over streaming one would hope and the special features leave room for improvement, but it’s still a handsome looking edition that Scorsese fans will be happy to snatch up. When the men are unloading the weapons from the US Army truck, two men can be seen carrying a box of rifles labeled "M-16" but the US Army didn't start getting M-16 rifles until 1964 which would have been three years after the Bay of Pigs Invasion that took place in 1961. Once the disc is inserted into the player, the static menu without music immediately pops up; no previews or promos precede it.The notes state that digital cameras were used where de-aging effects were applied, but even then there is a nice photographic look to the image most of the time. Though The Irishman audio track won't tax your system, it supplies marvelous atmosphere and enhances this movie's quiet power and nostalgic mood. In the 1950s, truck driver Frank Sheeran gets involved with Russell Bufalino and his Pennsylvania crime family.
