Nikon Coolpix P950 review - Which?

The fastest frame rate available with the P950 is 7fps, which is reasonably useful for moving subjects, but there are better performers on the market. If you find you’re frequently trying to capture moving subjects, a bridge camera like the Panasonic FZ2000 is likely to be a more sensible option for you, thanks to its “4K Photo” functionality. We didn’t expect there to be any surprises when it came to image quality from the Nikon Coolpix P950, considering it uses the same sensor and lens combination as its predecessor, the P900. I'd guess that 99.99% of the people who buy cameras such as this, never make a print larger than postcard size, and most likely only use their images on social media. So the relatively poor image quality simply wouldn't be noticed. Again, as before, automatic white balance is excellent, producing accurate colours under a variety of different lighting conditions. Though specific white balance presets are available, you might find little need to use them - especially with the addition of raw format shooting support.

The 83x optical zoom of the COOLPIX P950 covers an incredible focal-length range, from wide-angle 24mm1 to super-telephoto 2,000mm1 and everything in between. With a zoom this powerful, you can capture distant subjects far beyond the reach of an ordinary camera—from birds and other animals in the wild, to distant landscapes, aircraft and even planets. Dynamic Fine Zoom2, an enhanced digital zoom that effectively doubles the reach to a 4,000mm1, allowing for even greater zoom potential. At the other end of the spectrum, macro photography can be captured as close as approx. 1 cm/0.4 in.3. From macro close-ups to extreme telephoto superzoom , the COOLPIX P950 delivers sharp, clear and beautiful images, all in a compact, highly portable body.

Point is, if the light is ideal, you *may* squeeze out a keeper now and then. Once the light dips below anything below optimal, IQ is in the toilet. the only thing that comes close is the excellent nikon 1 70-300mm with olympus tcon 1.7x or c210 1.9x , but incredibly shake-y and also dead system and definitely no close-ups mxx: "Let's see YOUR pics at 2000mm.". This is 1500mm equivalent (400mmx1.4x1.4x1.6x1.2) (400mm with internal extender + external extender + 1.6 APC factor + slightly crop in post): With its extensive reach, the COOLPIX P950 is the ideal companion camera for photographers who want to photograph birds or wildlife, or for keen aircraft spotters. The 83x optical zoom offers a focal length range of 24–2000 mm1, while the 166x Dynamic Fine Zoom digitally extends the upper limit to an incredible 4000 mm2. We've got no complaints with the P950's electronic viewfinder, though. This has been upgraded from the 0.2-inch, 921k-dot LCD EVF found in the P900, and the P950 gets a 0.39-inch, 2359k-dot OLED unit. The size and resolution increase makes the EVF genuinely useful in the P950, whereas you'd need to be a big fan of squinting to find the P900's EVF any use.I'm a Nikon DSLR user with 75-300mm lens shooting RAW and then edit in Affinity Photo. I'm into aviation photography and considering either P1000 or upgrading my lens to Sigma 150-600mm. Quality will be good but heavy and not portable. Overall, it’s interesting to see Nikon still investing in this area of the market. It shows that there’s still some interest in bridge cameras, perhaps particularly for travel photographers and wildlife enthusiasts who don’t have the means, or the space, for the equivalent lenses you’d need for either a mirrorless or DSLR system. Another improvement comes in the shape of a boost to viewfinder resolution. This makes the viewfinder much more pleasant to use, and will again be welcomed by enthusiasts.

The P950's lens (like pretty much all lenses of this type) is best once you zoom in a little. This image was converted from Raw and I coulThe lens closes down to f/5.6 by the 30x (700mm) zoom setting, and Imatest shows good quality here as well (2,300 lines). Zooming in just a little bit further, to the 33x setting (800mm), reduces it to f/6.3, and slightly drops resolution (2,200 lines).

Still, the P950 does what a lot of other cameras can't do. And if you're a fan of capturing wildlife, or just looking for a single-camera solution for a national park, the P950 is a very good option overall. It's still in a niche, but not quite as narrow of one as the Nikon P1000, an even larger, heavier superzoom with a 125x lens. The Nikon Coolpix P950 is a mega-zoom camera with a lens equivalent to 24-2000mm, with an image stabilizer capable of reducing shake by up to 5.5 stops. The minimum focus distance of the lens is just 1cm (0.4"). The P950 uses a 16MP 1/2.3" sensor and supports Raw capture. Video can be captured at 4K/30p, and a mic input lets users capture higher-quality audio. Lens is sharp at 2000mm. Fine feather details my D7500 with 70 to 300mm AF-P lens cant get....simply because subject is too far...too small. The vast majority of the time, the all-purpose metering setting does a good of producing well-balanced exposures. With the ability to shoot in raw format introduced, being able to tweak highlights and shadows in post-production is a welcome feature on the occasion that a high-contrast scene might throw it off. For those that prefer to get it right in-camera, dialling in a little exposure compensation can help to lift some dull scenes.

An improvement to the Nikon P950 comes in the shape of adding raw format recording support. This means you now have more flexibility to tweak images after the fact, which is likely to be welcome news for enthusiast photographers.
