The History of Las AlpujarrasHistorically, La Alpujarra was colonized by many: Iberians, Celts, Romans, Visigoths, and Moors, and it was the final refuge for the Moors when the Catholic Kings reclaimed the land in the 15th Century. Lanjarón is considered to be the "gateway village" to the more northern Alpujarra regions, and whose unique culture still retains its strong roots to its ancient Morisco past. The duration of your holiday can range from one day to one week, depending on your personal goals, and are led by Chris Dale. You can also opt for “Dynamic Rest” days between training days and climb some mountains at a more leisurely pace with a Spanish Highs walking guide to help stretch your legs and avoid injury and/or seizing of leg muscles. If you have time, there is a great 3-hour hike that loops through the villages and the gorge with stunning views. Join us on a tour of the mysterious and timeless Alpujarra... an area of Spain where people have lived for many thousands of years... Lanjarón - The SpaOne of Lanjarón's main attractions is its spa. The Balneario is the most well-known healing spa in Andalucia and its hot springs are considered to be the best in Spain. Below is our standard route here which combines the popular peak of Trevenque, the arid badlands of Las Arenales and returning via the lush green gorge of the Dilar valley

Wander through Salado Park What an admirable place. You should come to visit this paradise. I have found curious romances and tales! -- Lanjarón — Federico García Lorca, In a letter to Cuban diplomat Melchor Fernández Almagro Lanjaron’s next claim to fame occurred during the War of Independence, or Peninsula War as it is known in the UK, when the township of Lanjaron held out against the besieging French troops. Its inhabitants received the accolade of ‘canoneros’. This little piece of history explains the rusty 18th century naval cannon at one end on the main street. The tiled plaque on the wall behind the cannon points out that, in October 2000, the Spanish Admiral of the Straits noticed the fact that the canoneros of Lanjaron did not have a cannon. So, he sifted through his naval supplies and gave them one thereby signifying, as the plague on the cannon emphasises, ‘the special bond between canoneros and marine’. A Gentile Town Lanjarón has a series of fountains distributed through the streets and plazas. Most are accompanied by a short phrase or poem, usually by Federico García Lorca, and are used by locals and visitors for drink and rest. There numerous fountains in the town, these carry chlorinated water. Then there are three fountains with fresh spring water outside of town. Also note that the local spa owns its own fountains, which costs 1 euro to tap from. Here follows a gallery with all the town fountains: At Spanish Highs, we understand the need to strive towards new challenges. If you are preparing for ultra, mountain, or multi-stage race, or just want to do something to put yourself to the test, the Sierra Nevada provides the perfect location.
