Phoenix could also be a little melodramatic at times too, like when he was talking about all that ”I am reborn!” stuff, and more than once I found myself thinking, Seriously, what is that all about? Strangely though, I never found him annoying, apart from perhaps slightly when he seemed to have a totally different personality at school and at home. I wished he would just decide if he was embarrassed by his dad, or if he admired him. Simpkins, Stéphanie Bory et Fiona (11 July 2018). "Interview with Alan Gibbons, Labour Party Activist". With the string trailing behind him, Theseus made his way through the labyrinth, found the Minotaur and defeated the beast. He escaped Crete with the children and Princess Ariadne, but then left the princess on the island of Naxos, halfway to Athens! During my big trawl for books that were retelling the Minotaur myth in the context of London, I was pointed towards Shadow of the Minotaur. I didn’t get my hands on it in time for the deadlines I was working towards, which actually is just as well – it’s located not in London, but Brownleigh, somewhere whose main characteristic is very pointedly not being London. However, it’s an interesting addition to my thoughts about how myth and place and space interact, particularly as the Minotaur seems to be a myth which offers a lot of scope for that kind of interpretative engagement. My personal thoughts on this novel was it was overall well-written and paced. We first establish the existence of a game called the "Legendeer", a truly innovative virtual game, which is great for our protagonist Phoenix who basically hates everything about his life - his school, his house, and his computer geek dad embarrasses him. Whenever he immerses himself in the game, he's found his world, his destiny - inside the computer. But soon things turn for the worst, and when Phoenix tries to escape this "realm of Ancient Greek Mythology", he can't! He has written over 60 books and won a number of awards including a Blue Peter Book Award for his best-selling book Shadow of the Minotaur. In March 2022, Gibbons was among a group of seven Liverpool Labour councillors who broke the whip to vote against the ruling party's proposed budget for Liverpool City Council. In his speech, he said: "Liverpool’s communities are at breaking point. As a matter of conscience, I am not prepared to vote for cuts that will make life harder for the people I represent". [19]Minotaur, a horror adaptation of the legend starring Tom Hardy as Theo (Theseus), was released on DVD by Lions Gate in 2006. [47] Once Hunters have entered Zokor, the number of the clues found for that District provide the same amount of Stealth. The contest between Theseus and the Minotaur was frequently represented in Greek art. A Knossian didrachm exhibits on one side the Labyrinth, on the other the Minotaur surrounded by a semicircle of small balls, probably intended for stars; one of the monster's names was Asterion or Asterius ("star").

In Greek mythology, the Minotaur ( / ˈ m aɪ n ə t ɔːr, ˈ m ɪ n ə t ɔːr/ MY-nə-tor, MIN-ə-tor, [1] US: / ˈ m ɪ n ə t ɑːr, - oʊ-/ MIN-ə-tar, -oh-; [2] [3] Ancient Greek: Μινώταυρος [miːnɔ̌ːtau̯ros]; in Latin as Minotaurus [miːnoːˈtau̯rʊs]) is a mythical creature portrayed during classical antiquity with the head and tail of a bull and the body of a man [4] (p 34) or, as described by Roman poet Ovid, a being "part man and part bull". [a] In 1974, Gibbons joined the International Socialists, forerunner to the Socialist Workers Party, where he was an organiser and member of the National Committee, before becoming disillusioned and leaving the party in 1996. [14] He was President of Knowsley National Union of Teachers (NUT) and a member of the Anti-Nazi League. [15]I totally loved Shadow of the Minotaur. There were several parts where I considered rating it five stars, and I simply loved this awesome original take on the Greek myths. It’s sort of hard to judge this book, it being the first in a trilogy, because obviously I don’t know what might be revealed and what might be tied up in the next two books. But, hey, I’m going to give it a go anyway! Best known for writing children's and young adult fiction, Gibbons has written over 60 books, which have been translated into dozens of languages. [4] He has won numerous awards including a Blue Peter Book Award, Angus Book Award and Leicester Book of the Year Award, and was twice shortlisted for a Carnegie Medal. Kitabın kapak tasarımı Melek Koç’a ait. The ending was a classic deus ex machina, and it would have been preferable to see Phoenix escape by his own efforts.

Incidentally, the description for this book in GoodReads is confused, as he never goes to the underworld, which would have been interesting. I think an encounter with Hades might have been a good conclusion. So let’s talk about the game itself. The Greek mythology theme was epic; I enjoyed reading about familiar characters and stories and seeing how they were portrayed, and the reminders of those I’d forgotten and information on ones I wasn't familiar with was interesting and not all patronizing to the reader. I also loved the mystery of who were the makers of the game. In fact, there was a lot of mysterious things going on which were mostly only mentioned in passing or hinted to, but Gibbons never seemed to feel the need for Phoenix to keep reminding us of them to try and keep us interested – which was good because I didn't need him to! In addition to his work as a writer and library campaigner, Gibbons is a lifelong socialist and trade unionist. The tool-tip reads: The district leader approaches!
