Shelley, Bruce C. (2007). "Acquire". In Lowder, James (ed.). Hobby Games: The 100 Best. Green Ronin Publishing. pp.1–4. ISBN 978-1-932442-96-0. He corresponded with professional game designers as well as amateurs who developed ideas for games and asked him for advice and critiques. Annual visits to the Toy Fair in New York City were opportunities to meet colleagues and to acquire more games and reference materials for his huge collections.

If you love business sims, you will enjoy this excellent ASCII classic that is very faithful to the board game, with a tremendous replay value and good AI. Hasbro did decide to once again use plastic for the board and the tiles instead of the worthless use of cardboard in the 2008 edition. Yet this is probably one of the only positives to this new edition. Hasbro had a chance to bring the ACQUIRE franchise out of the pit to which it plummeted in 2008 but all they have done with the 2016 edition is take the franchise sideways. MEGAcquire GOLD will appeal to players of any age who like the feeling of power that is acquired through achievement. It is recommended for ages 13 and up, but cannot be limited in age because of the early possession of business savvy that can be found in younger players. Average playing time is two to three hours, but shorter time limits can easily be set. Acquire is one of those few old games that has aged far more gracefully than the finest of wines. I can easily point out that this game is easier to teach than Monopoly while still preserving a competitive edge that remains sharp to this day. The game’s inclusion in the 2023 event of the World Series of Board Gaming, the pinnacle of competitive board gaming, is a testament to its enduring appeal and strategic depth. Mastering the Deal

Plastic board, building tiles, and headquarters! Updated board size, 9x12 space grid with space designations printed on the board.

Eskin, Blake, “Sold Separately,” The New Yorker, January 20, 2003, http://www.newyorker.com/printables/talk/030120ta_talk_eskin (accessed 1/4/2007). In 1995 Avalon Hill abandoned the “bookshelf” look and produced a bigger, flat board with cardboard tiles. It was a disappointing version in terms of the tiles being able to slide across the board, but it introduced the “Special Power Variants” to the United States. Acquire, the classic 1960s board game considered by many as one of the best alternatives to Monopoly, will see a new edition later this year. Based on that description, you might get the impression that Acquire is the perfect game, but it isn’t. No game is perfect, and Acquire isn’t an exception here. Michael made the suggestion early on that manufacturing possibilities allowed the tiles to be in a different shape other than square. His first suggestion was a hexagon. It was a beautiful idea that allowed connection on all sides of the tile. The final result has allowed the makeup of the board during game play to achieve some very interesting results.

In 1937, he entered City College of New York, from which he graduated magna cum laude with a Bachelor of Science degree in civil engineering. He became a professionally licensed civil engineer . Among other projects, he worked on the battleship Missouri, the aircraft carrier Yorktown, the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge, and the World Trade Center. Has received several awards including being inducted into the Academy of Adventure Gaming Arts & Design Hall of Fame in 1989.

In the following paragraphs I will outline the good with the bad. There is a lot more bad than good. I will also include photos that are not professional but, at a minimum, they will give you a closer look at the game. In 1980 the editors praised it as a "classic game of getting in on the ground floor" and "proof that you need money to make money", noting that "a delicate sense of timing is important, but greed and a lust for power also help." [4] This booklet goes a long way to helping new players learn and understand the game of ACQUIRE. It is just a shame that they didn't give this much attention to the rest of the game. Hasbro has fully illustrated and explained how to play the game of ACQUIRE in this booklet but you still can't see the board or decipher the tiles. The tiles are a nice size, but the choice of font for the printing of the designations on the tiles makes them very cumbersome to use. It appears to be some type of italicized font and they chose to print the numbers smaller than the letters. The human brain can read two things together when they are the same size. When they are made as two different sizes, the human brain tends to have to process them separately. This causes a longer time to process what tile a player is looking at.

About

Acquire is a board game published by 3M in 1964 that involves multi-player mergers and acquisitions. It was one of the most popular games in the 3M Bookshelf games series published in the 1960s, and the only one still published in the United States. In 1983, the editors commented "Adding to chains increases their value, but you must anticipate mergers, which occur when someone plays the right connecting tile at the right time." [7]
