This curl gel (or ~jelly~ if we're gettin' fancy) has a super-thin consistency, making it easy to spread throughout your type 3 to type 4 hair. The lightweight formula is filled with aloe vera and sugar beetroot to keep curls hydrated and softly defined—this definitely isn't a strong- or even medium-hold gel—though drier hair types will want to layer this one over your leave-in or oil. The Remington PROluxe Curling Wand looks a lot more expensive than it is, was comfortable to use and felt well made. We loved the digital display, which shows the temperature of the wand. There are no less than 10 temperature settings ranging from 120°C - 210°C to suit different hair types and styles. It’s the stiff, hardened coating that stronger-hold gels often leave behind on curly hair. As your hair dries, the gel forms a crunchy shell around each of your curls/waves, defining it while protecting it from humidity and frizz. In junior high, we called this a ~lewk~. In 2020, we call this step one. Step two is to “ scrunch out the crunch” or “ break the cast." According to hairstylist Larry King, those with curly hair should apply most products while the hair is still wet. Frizz begins as the hair dries, so keeping your products in the shower will give you the most defined results. Start with a curl cream, then scrunch a blob of mousse through the lengths to keep the curls defined and frizz-free.

The 16 Best Gels for Curly Hair | Who What Wear UK

Okay, so you don’t need to use a pre-wash treatment, but it can be a good way to give your curls a little extra care. What’s unique about this one is a proprietary blend of proteins specifically meant to target the needs of curly hair (which, FYI, has a different composition of proteins than straight hair). Work this into wet hair and let it sit for five to 10 minutes to do its thing—namely strengthen, moisturize, soften, detangle, and elongate your curls—then shampoo and condition as usual. If you thought that hair gel was a recipe for crunchy, flakey, and stiff curls, I can't say I blame you. I thought the same until I discovered the Curly Girl Method a few years ago (a technique—nay, a way of life—for getting truly excellent curls) and found that a main component of getting said perfect curls was hair gel. So, I decided to rethink my initial thoughts and add one to my collection of curly hair products. And, folks, I truly cannot emphasize this revelation enough: Curly hair gel is the key to excellent-looking hair for every curl type .

5. Curl Revivals

Hair is unique, so when it comes to curl creams, there isn't a one size fits all option. There are a few key components to keep in mind when shopping for the best curl cream: According to Rivera, curl boosting sprays are typically a great choice for fine hair. "They can be spritzed evenly over hair and tend to be very lightweight," says Rivera. "This allows fine hair to maintain its curl rather than being weighted down." For medium hair, you can also look for a curl cream that is light in weight, which will help define the curl, while cutting down the frizz. And finally, if you have coarse hair, a denser curl cream can provide additional control and enhance style. A gel will provide that separation that you like to see when you have curls, and it's also going to give you a little bit more definition," says Leigh Hardges, a Chicago-based hair stylist. "Because of the way it coats the hair, it's going to help prevent frizz." According to Hardges, hair gel works best on 3A (loose, springy ringlets) to 4A (tight, defined, S-shaped curls) hair types. But first, how do you apply hair gel? Give your hair some extra love with this deep conditioning treatment, which boasts a clean formula filled with natural and plant-based ingredients. The stars of the show are oils (sunflower seed and baobab seed) that add a hefty dose of moisture but are still lightweight enough that they won’t weigh down your hair. Also nice: Leave it on for five to 10 minutes to reap those deep conditioning benefits. If you’re in a rush, you can also use it as a traditional conditioner. Bonus points for the light, peach scent, which is naturally derived.

A contraption that pulls your hair into its depths may sound like a torture device, but using this self-curling wand is a pain-free experience. Simply place the barrel midway up a small section of hair and watch as it swivels up into the curling chamber. After a few seconds, release it to find a tight curl, where even the tips are curly. It should only take around 25-30 minutes and both sides of the hair are equally easy to do. Another great way to tame coarse, flyaway hair is to use a relaxing balm. This one by Phyto helps to loosen the curls so they start to straighten, but not so much so that you lose texture or volume. You'll love the lightweight consistency that won't leave your hair feeling greasy. To get the look, Fugate says to create a deep side part (your hair has to be straight to start), and roll sections of hair under, toward your head, and from ends to roots. Once the rollers have cooled (give them 15 to 20 minutes), gently unravel and brush through your hair. "If you want all-over body and movement, set the rollers in the same pattern described in the previous slide," he says. "The jumbo diameter will create looser waves." If you've ever used a gel that's pure hold and nothin' else in your protective style, you already know that too much structure can be a drying nightmare. But this castor oil-based gel has enough slip and hydration to keep your braids, knots, and twists moisturized and held without drying them out or feeling stiff. Buttery-smooth is real here. Gavazzoni Dias MF. Hair cosmetics: An overview. Int J Trichol. 2015;7(1):2. doi: 10.4103/0974-7753.153450As easy as it sounds, sometimes the perfect set of curls can be one of the hardest things to achieve without having certain products to make hair curly. Every curly girl is after a well-defined ringlet, but sometimes our curls just don’t seem to be having a good day. Frizzy, barely defined, or plagued by limpness are some of the worst characteristics that bad curly hair days can have.

15 Best Curly Hair Gels in 2023, Tested and Reviewed

If you try one of these gels and immediately hate your hair the next day, it may be more on user error—ahem, you <3—than on the actual product itself, especially if you're working with finer or looser curl types (think: 2b waves to 3b curls), which can easily be weighed down. Which means before you decide you hate the gel, give it 2-3 full weeks of experimenting before making a yay or nay decision. You can use the gel curler on dry hair, you don't have to sleep with it in, which is a plus for people who find the overnight method uncomfortable. With such high temperatures, the Curl Secret may not be right for every day usage, but it certainly creates showstopping curls that look more natural as the day goes on. I think it’s time we talked about The Scrunch. It’s the curly hair styling game-changer. I don’t even know if you can call it a technique, it’s that simple. But it’s the cherry on top of your freshly dried style and, importantly, the key to incorporating gel into your haircare routine.

I’ve been on a lot of dates, and these are the most irresistible perfumes to wear

Associate news editor Gabi Thorne loves the lightweight hold and sweet scent of Mielle Organics's Honey & Ginger Styling Gel. "I would use this on a wash-and-go [hairstyle] for defined and soft hair with no flakiness," she says. "And I love that it's a pump because it's so much easier to push out product." With an ever-expanding array of hair curlers on the market, which will make your hair look perfect rather than poodle? We’ve done the hard work so you don’t have to, so read on for the best curlers in 2023. Celebrity hairstylist Kristin Ess (known for her work with Lauren Conrad, Lucy Hale, and more) has a line of affordable, high-quality hair products that we recommend giving a try, and this co-wash is at the top of the list. Rather than using traditional shampoo, this hydrating formula cleanses, detangles, and softens—all without stripping curls of their natural moisture. (Oh, and it’s choice for combating frizz, too.) And while it’s ideal for those with curly hair, this is a great option for anyone whose hair is on the drier side. This custard is on the lighter end of the custard spectrum, so it won't feel as heavy on finer hair types. It has a bit of hold and a bit of hydration, which actually makes it killer for either adding a moisturizing layer to protective styles (try it in place of cream in the LOC method) or for helping 2c to 3c curls clump together without weighing them down.

Hair GelCurler™️ Express Curl Kit – Bunnies Hair

The kit I received in the mail came with the GelCurler itself, two large alligator clips to hold it in place, and two large scrunchies to secure my hair off at the bottom. It also came with a storage pouch and a heat protector to place the GelCurler in before microwaving. When choosing the correct hair curler for you, you need to consider the type of curl you want, your own hair type and length, your budget, and whether you’ll be curling regularly or for red carpet events only. Not You Mother's Curl Talk Frizz Control Sculpting Gel is news editor Nicola Dall'Asen's go-to when she needs an affordable gel to mold her frizz-prone 2B curls.
