The novel is set in Jones’s beloved Wales, and scattered with Welsh terms of endearment, which adds to the sensation of reading it wrapped in a comfort blanket. Love Untold tells the stories of four generations of women, mothers and daughters set in South Wales. Everyone thinks they know the truth, but they are all keeping secrets, will Grace's party be a joyous reunion or a day of tears and recriminations? But Grace’s granddaughter, Elin, is also estranged from Alys and any reconciliation will cause huge problems in the family. For Grace time is running out to solve the family rifts that have been going on for the last thirty years.

I must be very careful about spoilers in this delicious novel revolving around this family so full of resentment, long-held anger, prodigal daughters, and cold-water swimming. Is she strong enough to reach out to her wayward daughter, now seventy years old, and heal the rift? Ruth Jones is not afraid to push the emotional buttons, and her writing keeps getting better and better.

This is a story about mothers and daughters: the love inherent in that bond and the heartache that miscommunication can bring. I particularly liked the dynamic Soozi, Beca’s friend, a talented singer who says what she thinks, usually accompanied by swearing. Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher / author for providing me with a free electronic copy of this book for review. A story of three generations, misunderstandings, heart break, rescue, love and ultimately coming together. Ruth Jones is best known for her outstanding and award-winning television writing, most notably BBC One’s Gavin and Stacey, which she co-wrote with James Corden and in which she played the incorrigible Nessa Jenkins.

It is possible to empathise with each of them in some way but also to despair of any forgiveness for the irresponsible Alys. Dennoch war es mir zu sprunghaft, der häufige Wechsel zwischen den Zeiten, auch wenn ich natürlich verstehe, und schon früh ahnte, dass der Rückblick am Schluss notwendig ist, um nicht schon alles zu verraten. Elin, Becca’s mother is a headteacher, organised and knows what is best for everyone; her husband, her daughter and even her grandmother. It shows how complicated and complex any relationship can be, but also how wonderful and uplifting even in the darkest moments that the maternal bond gives you. The 2019 Christmas Day special of Gavin and Stacey gained national critical acclaim, drawing an audience of over 18 million, winning a BAFTA for TV moment of the year and a National Television Award for Impact. Finally, Beca, sixteen years old, artistic and musical but not good at lessons, constantly at odds with perfectionist Elin who sees education as a gateway to the world, she knows she is about to fail all her GCSEs and disappoint her mother, again.

She exudes warmth and wisdom, and reading this book makes you feel someone’s draped a warm overcoat across your shoulders. The depth of emotion between Judy, Chloe and baby Bobo is wonderful to watch, and in Love Untold this intergenerational maternal web is beautifully captured by Ruth Jones.
