The term Various Artists is used in the record industry when numerous singers and musicians collaborate on a song or collection of songs. The original Now Dance series began in 1985 and has been released in a variety of titles, formats, and release frequency. or Now 82 is a double-disc compilation album that was released in Ireland on 20 July 2012 and in the United Kingdom on 23 July 2012. The 1990s Yearbook series contains a new retro-90s logo design and artwork which also complements its sister decade series. The idea for the first album in the series came from Virgin Records boss Richard Branson and his associate Simon Draper.

The series is then moved forward again, with the release of Now Yearbook 1992 in July 2023 (an Extra followed in August). Some of them have unique track listings and are not related to similarly themed collections already issued on compact disc, however, more recent releases have been 'selections' taken from a larger CD collection (Rock, for example).

The first sixteen volumes were all released on the same date, with the final four being issued four months later.
