Description

This book has lots of cross curricular links for example geography and learning about climate change or art where the children draw their own view from their window. Her unique and distinctive style is instantly recognisable and she is well known for her use of mixed media to create detailed and elaborate collages. The projected rate, if we continue exponentially changing the world, is by the year 2000 we’ll be losing ten species an hour! The AusVELS standard which will beincorporated as part of the learning opportunity comes from level 4 as part ofthe ‘exploring and responding’ strand, and is ‘students use art language todescribe and discuss the communication of ideas, feelings and purpose in otherpeople’s arts works’ (VCAA, 2012).

The iconic wordless picture book, Window by Jeannie Baker, is

With each page, the boy grows and the scene changes, from forest, to a single house, to a village and then to a city. It would be really interesting to see how different children interpret the illustrations differently. For Stephen's, Baker's Belonging is a 'quintessential' example of a novel which positions the perspective of humans outside of nature and as the source of value and meaning (45).

Window – Jeannie Baker

This book, which has been used in school, is brilliant at getting children to make inferences based on the pictures, to question the changes that arise throughout and to develop an appreciation of the natural environment. Children willbe asked what a collage is, being reminded that a collage is a piece of artworkthat is able to be made using particular amounts of different pieces, which arethen glued together. But this book leaves me feeling depressed and impotent - not inspired to take actions to reduce my impact on the environment. The perfect book for any topic on environmental issues and land use, or just to simply read to promote speaking and listening. The streets gradually become places for safe children's play, and community activity and places for nature and wonder. Using plants was a problem at first but I have learnt how to preserve them so they last and I add permanent colour. It may not be stretching things too far to suggest that Jeannie Baker believes she can change the world through her work. This discussion should be colour includingthe primary and secondary colours, complementary colours as well as warm andcool colours (National Gallery of Art, 2013). Choose a picture and make a list of nouns that are used to describe the people, places and objects in the scene.

Window on a Changing World – Jeannie Baker

Window was shortlisted for the Kate Greenaway Medal in Great Britain and both Window and Mirror won the Children’s Book Council of Australia Picture Book of the Year Award. Use the window frame template to draw the image that you can see from a window in your home / school today (see Resources below). The book is composed of double-page spread collages created by Baker which together provide a narrative through a boy's life, or create a complex scene as stand-alone pieces.
