Description

Piper is a bright pink penguin with a white face and belly. She has a large orange beak and closed eyes with very short lashes. They have orange-colored ear patches and a thin strip on their upper chests. They form large colonies with hundreds of thousands of breeding pairs. There are 18 species of penguins in total. These range from the small blue penguin found in New Zealand, to the mighty emperor that lives in the cold and snowy climate of the Antarctic. Let’s take a look at some of them. These penguins are prolific hunters and are constantly foraging for food throughout the day and night. Sea Secrets: Tiny Clues to a Big Mystery by Mary M. Each morning, little penguins will leave their burrow to spend the day fishing at sea. Over the day, they’ll travel up to 20km in search of fish, cephalopods and crustaceans. After dusk, they return home in “rafts” and scurry across the beach in a “penguin parade”. As krill fishing in the Southern Ocean increases due to the demand for Omega-3 oil used in supplements, scientists worry the removal could impact the higher trophic levels that include penguins, seals, and whales. The impact of the krill fishery is under close watch by scientists and the Commission for the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources (CCAMLR), which was established in 1982 to regulate krill harvesting in the Southern Ocean. Gentoo Penguins are one of the most distinct-looking penguin species on our list. They have unique white patches above their eyes and bright orange beaks that immediately identify this type of penguin. They tend to dive for prey the most at midnight and noon. Chinstrap Penguins enjoy a diet of fish and krill that live close to their breeding colonies. Fairy Penguin The Humboldt Penguin is a mid-sized species that weighs about ten pounds and measures around 26 to 28 inches long.Three Adélie juvenile penguins lose their baby feathers in February by Palmer Station, Antarctica. (Danielle Hall) The earliest known penguins evolved shortly after the demise of the dinosaurs in the Cretaceous-Tertiary mass extinction. Roughly 66 million years ago species from the genus Waimanu lived in the waters off of New Zealand. The two species of Waimanu penguins are currently considered the basal ancestors, meaning they are considered the earliest common ancestor of all penguins. Flightless like modern penguins, Waimanu penguins still maintained anatomical similarities to flying birds and may have had swimming capabilities similar to a loon or cormorant. Their beaks were long and slender and their legs were slightly larger than the modern penguins. The discovery of these ancient penguins was based on an analysis of four separate specimens from North Canterbury, New Zealand that are some of the best-preserved avian fossils from that era. It was these specimens that supplied evidence for the theory that penguins split from other birds before the end of the Cretaceous epoch. The scientific name for this gland is the uropygial gland and it is most developed in birds that live on the water because it aids in waterproofing the feathers. Yearly Moult

The largest penguin is the emperor penguin which can reach approximately 3.6 feet (1.1 meters) in height and weigh between 59.5 and 90 lbs (27 and 41 kilograms). In contrast, the smallest penguin, the little blue or the fairy penguin, is 10 – 12 inches (25 – 30 cm)in height, and its average weight is 2.2 lbs (1 kilogram). While that iconic image is arguably the most well-known, there are more than twenty different types of penguins spanning every continent in the southern hemisphere. This adorable specimen is one of the more whimsical species out of all the other different kinds of penguins. Penguins thrived as flightless birds, in part because in the Southern Hemisphere there are few terrestrial predators like the foxes and badgers of the Northern Hemisphere. Human introduced animals, like dogs, cats and foxes are problems since the animals often eat penguin eggs, harass breeding pairs, or outright kill penguins. There are over 30 colonies of king penguins on South Georgia Island in the Southern Atlantic Ocean. The penguins capture their prey, typically lanternfish, by diving at speeds of 12 miles per hour. (Steve Gould/Nature's Best Photography) They settle in large colonies on the Australian Islands, including Macquarie, Bishop, and Clerk. Galapagos Penguin

Male and female Chinstrap Penguins look very similar, but the male penguins are generally heavier and larger than their female counterparts. They inhabit islands in the South Atlantic, the Antarctic Peninsula, and New Zealand. Native to the Strait of Magellan in South America, these penguins are lightning-fast swimmers who hunt anchovies, sardines, and squid. Yellow-Eyed ( Megadyptes antipodes)- Yellow-eyed penguins are the most private of all penguins, preferring to nest out of sight from other penguins. They often forgo parental duties if they are within eyesight of other nesting couples. For this reason they often nest among the tree trunks of the dwarf rata forests on the islands off of New Zealand where they are native. The breeding season is particularly long, lasting from August to February. Egg incubation alone can take up to two months. They weigh between 5 and 5.5 pounds (2.3-2.5 kg) and reach heights of 65 cm (25 inches). They get their name from the bright yellow stripe that originates over their eyes to form an erect crest above their heads. They are a long-lived species, and some Emperors can live forty years or more. They are very fat, with lots of blubber to keep them warm in the world’s most inhospitable climate. Unlike King Penguins, they are less uniform in length and width, as their sizes vary widely based on their diets. Macaroni ( Eudyptes chrysolophus)- Macaroni penguins are the most abundant of all the penguins. The most southerly distributed crested penguin, they live along the coasts of sub-Antarctic islands and the Antarctic Peninsula. The lifespan of a Macaroni penguin spans from 8 to 15 years. Macaroni prefer krill but will also eat small fish and squid. They are roughly 27.5 inches (70 cm) in height and between 8 to 14 pounds (3.7-6.4 kg) in weight. The island-dwelling Fairy Penguins spend up to eighteen hours a day in the water and subsist primarily on small fish, krill, and squid. Penguins - American Oceans A Guide to the Different Types of Penguins - American Oceans

Australians call them Fairy Penguins, while New Zealanders refer to them as the Little Blue penguin. Emperor Penguins are highly social animals, and unlike all the other different types of penguins, these birds are not territorial.

Emperor Penguin ( Aptenodytes forsteri) – the largest of the penguin species, this large bird can be over a meter in height. They live in colonies on the Antarctic ice, where they keep each other warm from the wind chills which can reach -76 degrees Fahrenheit. Emperor penguins huddle together and take turns moving to the group’s interior to warm up. Once the penguin has warmed up it will move to the outer edge of the group to let another penguin escape from the cold wind! An artist’s portrayal of Kumimanu coming ashore on an ancient New Zealand beach. Surrounding it are smaller Petradyptes penguins that lived at the same time. This artwork accompanied a study published in the Journal of Paleontology. Galapagos Penguin ( Spheniscus mendiculus) –this penguin is endemic to the Galapagos Islands and is the only penguin found north of the equator. These penguins are listed as endangered and it is estimated that there are just 2000 left. The main threats to these animals include pollution, climate change, and getting caught as bycatch in fishing nets.
