Description

The making of this album was protracted, painful, and in all ways alive, and the album’s dour countenance was largely the product of theater and shadow.

Then the other instruments start, and veer into edge and roughness, with the exhausted yet sinister drums keeping pace with the singer. Near-telepathic about-turns dominate the alternate takes on ‘Love Sick’, his vocal continually reaching the venomous heights of the original release. A work of great ambition, the band feel unified, whole; it also dismisses speculation that a 20 (plus) minute version remains in the vaults. It’s notable, however, that this is Dylan’s last studio endeavour alongside a co-producer – each subsequent LP has been handled by Jack Frost, his studio nom de plume. It’s both pleasant and an interesting exercise to listen to these tracks with entirely different emphases and possibilities.

Online since 2010 it is one of the fastest-growing and most respected music-related publications on the net. In Der Spiegel, Max Dax gave a positive review of this album, writing that the new remix unleashes "the full musical power" of Dylan at this stage in his career. The unreleased outtakes on Fragments reveal some of the extraordinary moments they littered along the path. Dylan’s voice is much stronger, with the instruments tagging along in little interjections, like scurrying creatures in the alley down which the singer is walking. The playbacks were a disaster, musicians crashing audibly into one another as they struggled to adapt. Lines switch from song to song; the verses in “Dreamin’ of You” became much of “Standing in the Doorway,” for instance.Disc Four of Bob Dylan – Fragments presents the songs in a series of spectacular live performances from 1998-2001 featuring Dylan and his touring ensemble: Larry Campbell (guitar, mandolin, pedal steel, and slide guitar), Bucky Baxter (pedal steel and slide guitar, 1998-1999), Charlie Sexton (guitar, 2000-2001), Tony Garnier (bass) and David Kemper (drums).

The pretty standardised lyrics on these versions don’t show the massive amount of work Dylan put into the song, as manifested in his handwritten archival drafts. One particular highlight here is the highly energised, almost incendiary live version of Cold Irons Bound from the Bonnaroo Festival in June 2004 and, based on this performance, I can only wonder how good it would be to get this full show officially released at some point in the future.
