If your last experiences of Mad Men were the closing episodes of the final series – with Don Draper making like Kerouac to the west coast – then to revisit the series at its very beginning, in the smoky cool of 1960 New York, is to land with the judder of a Mohawk touching down at Idlewild airport. His life, we soon learn, is as crafted and stage-managed as any of the images he creates for Lucky Strike or Kodak. This is the kind of subtle precision track that isn’t trying to wow you, but is just as impressive (and all too overlooked). Mad Men’s opening episodes are packed with intriguing introductions, seedy confrontations, and thick tension. Alas, her success is overshadowed as the other secretaries and executives begin to undermine her authority and question her talent, motives, and determination.

As Don makes the plays in the boardroom and the bedroom, he struggles to stay a step ahead of the rapidly changing times and the young executives nipping at his heels. Ever since 2007, we've been infatuated with the characters and time period of 'Mad Men', particularly the mystery and charisma of the show's lead, Don Draper (Jon Hamm), who has become an iconic pop culture figure. I can’t guarantee everyone in TV land will enjoy its slow pace and niche subject matter, but I can definitely say it deserves all the attention and accolades it has received over the last year. Occasionally, the tracks with other members of the cast and crew are fun (I loved the track on episode 4 with Elisabeth Moss and Colin Hanks), but more often than not they slip into backslapping nonsense (or just peter out). All 92 episodes of the period drama series, set in a prestigious advertising agency in 1960s New York, where sexism is a way of life and everyone smokes like a chimney. The series was shot on 35mm film for the first four seasons, which is unusual these days but helped give those episodes a sense of period and results in some absolutely gorgeous transfers on Blu-ray. Unfortunately, I only had time to sample fifteen minutes or so of every track -- it’ll take me weeks (as a fan of the show) to eventually dig through it all. Sure, the Blu-ray edition doesn’t include any significant exclusive content per se, but the sheer enormity of the supplemental package will take even the most eager fans days to dig through.

Occasionally other channels get used, and generally the effect is one of subtle immersion – you feel as though you’re just down the hall from the steno pool. His good friend and direct manager, Roger Sterling (John Slattery), has big plans for Don and readily embraces his thoughts and vision for the company.

Birth of An Independent Woman (HD, 43:09) This is, bar none, the highlight of the entire set, special features-wise. Mad Men Music Sampler -- Similar to the Sampler included with ‘Weeds: Season Three,’ this provides previews of each track of the series’ soundtrack.

The Party of the Century, Scoring Mad Men: Themes of Season Five, Scoring Mad Men: Inside a Session and The Uniform Time Act of 1966. The early 1960s Manhattan inhabited by the staff at Sterling Cooper may have seemed like a Norman Rockwell painting, but it quickly turned into an Edward Hopper. The only downside here is that ‘Mad Men’s DTS HD MA track isn’t nearly as breathtaking as its video transfer or supplemental package. Presenting an ego-driven world of clashing personalities, there is a whole assortment of dramatisation and well-acted scenes for you to sink your teeth into. Everyone still looks fabulous, drinking and smoking and wearing thin ties, but without the bubbly electricity. Show your advertising skills by building your own collection of Mad Men merchandise to show off to your friends and family. His assertion seems to be that advertisers don’t care for your well-being any more than the companies they represent.

The Final Season: Part 2 is the end for television's most celebrated show; four-time Primetime Emmy winner for Outstanding Drama Series and winner of three consecutive Golden Globes. The digital transfers are also beautifully handled, avoiding any artefacts, edge enhancement or banding to deliver every gorgeously shot episode and recreate the 1960s perfectly. The series finale, which has been widely discussed almost as much as the finale of ' The Sopranos', leaves us with an image of Don Draper that seems to tell us that this character has been met with as much success as he's had failures, but he has finally found his place in the world, and who he really is, which is followed by one of the most famous ads to ever come out. In this highly competitive, all white, male-dominated environment, the indefatigable Don Draper is the top ad executive, but there are plenty of young guns eager to topple him from his perch. After seven fantastic seasons, creator Matthew Weiner gave almost every character a proper send off.
