A professional resident birding guide can help you find specific birds you want to see. Hacienda Baru Lodge:Tinamou can be seen all over the country. This varies by variety. For example, the Highland Tinamou is common in high places such as Monteverde and the Great Tinamou is more common in lowland areas (we saw one at Carara National Park once near Jaco). La Paz Waterfall Gardens Birding Tours: The jacamars are near passerine birds from tropical South America, with a range that extends up to Mexico. They feed on insects caught on the wing, and are glossy, elegant birds with long bills and tails. In appearance and behavior they resemble the Old World bee-eaters, although they are more closely related to puffbirds. The most common parrots and macaws that you may spot in Costa Rica are; scarlet macaws, great green macaws, and the crimson fronted parakeet. Where to See Parrots and Macaws

The silky-flycatchers are a small family of passerine birds which occur mainly in Central America, although the range of one species extends to central California. They are related to waxwings and like that group have soft silky plumage, usually gray or pale yellow. They have small crests. The members of this small family, created in 2018, were formerly considered to be tyrant flycatchers, family Tyrannidae. Some of the best places to look for toucans are the lower Pacific Slope (Manuel Antonio, Dominical, Uvita area), the Monteverde cloud forest area, and the Tortuguero area on the Caribbean coast. Resplendent QuetzalSo as a bird lover, you’ll appreciate being able to experience their splendor in their natural habitat, thanks to rigorous conservation efforts. Their coloring is metallic bronze-green above and cinnamon below, slightly paler on the chin and upper throat. For such an unassuming little bird, the Social Flycatcher is persistent regarding meals. These small songbirds perch on branches and wait for insects to fly by. Then, they zip out of the tree and catch the insect mid-flight! But that’s not their only hunting strategy. This brilliant Tanager prefers the middle elevations of the Central and Talamanca Mountains. It’s a large Tanager, standing at 7 inches. The male and female have similar markings, but the male is bright red orange and the female a duller yellow. Generally, Costa Rica is considered safe for tourists. However, like any travel destination, it’s best to use caution and be aware of your surroundings.
