Description

When US Prohibition came into force in January 1920, the Scotch world was dismayed. Economic depression, coupled with high taxation, had forced a high reliance on export markets. However, as was the case with a handful of other blenders, the company’s distribution to markets close to the United States such as Canada, Latin America and the West Indies suddenly shot up. If some shipments made their way into the States, then so be it. Fill a high ball glass with ice. Add the whisky, Sourz Mango and a dash of grenadine. Lengthen with the pineapple juice, stir & serve with a slice of lemon. Using The Famous Grouse as a foundation, with its chocolate orange flavour and long, slow finish, these three serves evoke the taste of summer with their fruity finishes:

Add The Famous Grouse to the tea cup and add an Earl Grey teabag. Leave to infuse for 2 minutes and remove teabag. Add plenty of crushed ice, then top with the ginger cordial and stir well. Contains 2 measures alcoholIt wasn’t until Matthew Gloag III inherited the business from William in 1896 that the company registered its first blended Scotch, the Brig o’ Perth. A year later, The Famous Grouse was released at the same time as The Grouse Brand. Today, the Famous Grouse is the second best-selling blended Scotch whisky in the UK and the 32nd biggest drinks brand worldwide. Furthermore, it is heralded as Scotland's favourite drink. The blend is made up of noteworthy components; whisky from The Macallan, The Glenrothes and Highland Park are included, though 65% of the spirit content is made up of grain whisky.

While many sources claim the Famous Grouse story began in 1800, the story of Matthew Gloag & Sons didn’t start with the Gloags at all. Rather, it began with the Browns. It was in fact Margaret who acquired a license to sell wine and spirits (and snuff) in 1831; Matthew didn’t join the business until 1835 when the name was changed to Matthew Gloag. Margaret died just five years later. And while it may be Matthew’s name on the bottle, it was his daughter, Philippa, who drew the first ever grouse on the label. Inspired by Balmoral Castle, the Royal Family’s summer residence, we have created a long, refreshing summer drink. Combining sweet honey flavours with British berries, this delicious serve is garnished with a sprig of heather for a famous Scottish flourish.

In May 2014, The Famous Grouse was named the official whisky of the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. After a day in the Scottish countryside, our founder, Matthew Gloag, named it not after himself, but after an occasion, in tribute to Perthshire’s favourite bird and in honour of its idillic home.

The Famous Grouse is a brand of blended Scotch whisky produced by The Edrington Group in Scotland. It was first produced by Matthew Gloag & Son in 1896. [1] The single malt whiskies used in The Famous Grouse blend include the Edrington-owned Highland Park and The Macallan. [2] Its emblem is the red grouse, Scotland's national game bird. [1] We were originally named The Grouse. A smooth, perfectly balanced whisky, created as a reward for our fellow Scots. The Famous Grouse blend was conceived by a Perth based grocer and drinks merchant named Matthew Gloag. In 1860, his son, William Gloag assumed control of his father's company and started blending whisky. It was in 1896 that William's son, named Matthew for his grandfather, controlled operations, creating the Grouse brand in 1897. During the early 20th century, blended whisky was a very popular product and the Famous Grouse went from strength to strength.Today it’s our master blender who safeguards that legacy. Creating the best quality blended whisky to be shared and savoured all round the world. In 1860, his son, William Gloag, took over the company. Following the Great French Wine Blight the company began to look at creating its own blended whiskies around 1875. [ citation needed] In 1896, William's nephew, Matthew Gloag (1850-1912), took over the family business. He created a new blended brand called The Grouse in 1896. at this time the company was still operating from the grandfather's premises but had expanded to occupy adjacent shops, jointly covering 20 to 26 Atholl Street. [5] [6] In 1905 the limited company of Matthew Gloag & son was formed and the Grouse was renamed The Famous Grouse in the same year. [1] Matthew Gloag's daughter Phillippa first designed the label's grouse icon. [1] Only at this point did the company move to new purpose-built premises on Kinnoull Street.
