While Scarlet may not appear to be the oldest, the ‘creepiest’, the most striking or unusual doll, she does hold the title of the most foul-mouthed. Somethings have shifted here within the team we love and we don’t see as much from Helen in this one. There is a bit of difference in the dynamics here with the team and our guard went up when we start to see Helen butting heads with DI Harwood. We do see a new side to Helen that had us loving Helen even more as she struggles to find the balance between her job and her personal life. We also grew to love another character even more in this story. Introducing Grace, the Soft Fairy Doll - a magical and dainty companion that will enchant your child's imagination and bring a touch of sparkle to their playtime! Grace is a delightful fairy with a heart full of wonder and dreams. As for the case itself. It's scary to think of how easy it is to fake that someone is alive and well by having someone's phone. The kidnapper is a real psycho and the last part was very thrilling to listen to. If you have read the previous books will you love this book, and it works well as a standalone as well, even though some events from the past is mentioned. I had a weird perspective on the captor (bad guy) in this book, he really is light and shade and complex, I felt the author did a brilliant job on portraying him to be very unstable and impossible to read.

Fast-paced and full of cliffhangers this book was impossible to put down. I kept reading and reading hyperventilating as the mystery unraveled. This is the 3rd book in Helen Grace series. I haven't read the first 2 because I was told they weren't as good as this one. It didn't affect my reading even though there are a few major spoilers (such as the killers names from the first 2 cases). Our story begins with a girl waking up with a terrible hangover gradually realising she is not sleeping in her room but in a dark cellar. How creepy is that? The book is cleverly narrated, the story being told by different perspectives which makes it easier for the reader to understand and get to know the characters. I particularly enjoyed the chapters told from the serial killer's perspective. In crime stories we don't often get the chance to see inside the monster's head, what their dark thoughts are, why they choose to kill the way they kill. Their M.O is usually explained in a single chapter. This is not the case here. I almost felt sorry for this perpetrator. I have been late in coming to the table with this as it slipped down my kindle, I have a notepad but it fell apart and I had to rewrite my 'to read' books out and this one slipped me by. I was so excited to get my paws on book three in the Helen Grace series, she is one of my most liked female Detectives in the world of crime fiction. She did not let me down in this one either.Something wasn’t right. The smell. What was it about the smell of the sheets? They smelled . . . wrong. And as Helen struggles to understand the killer's motivation, she begins to realize that she's in a desperate race against time. Over time, Helen’s character has seen some growth, but it’s never in a way I would have imagined. Her actions here continued to confuse me, but in spite of Helen’s self- sabotage she did make some solid breakthroughs. The stars on her tutu twinkle like distant galaxies, reminding children of the wonders of the universe and the infinite possibilities that lie ahead.
