Description

You can usually treat dehydration at home, but severe cases may require hospitalization. Hospital care may include: Seekimmediatemedicalhelp if you suspect someone is severely dehydrated (see symptoms of severe dehydration).

If you're sweating a lot, or sweat out more than the amount of water you're drinking, this can cause dehydration. When your body doesn't have the volume of water to produce enough sweat, it can cause muscle cramps and joint pain. This is because you need sweat to cool you down when you're exercising or in a hot environment, and not being able to cool down will affect your muscles. Multiple glasses of water a day keep cramps and muscle pain at bay, particularly following exercise or exposure to hot conditions. A good rule is to drink until your pee is pale or clear in colour, as dark yellow pee is a sign of dehydration. The important thing to know about drinking water, in the UK and everywhere else, is that, while it leaves the water treatment works in a disinfected, safe, state, it then has to travel through many miles of pipework before being consumed. It is impossible to keep this pipework completely clean and so the water is treated with a disinfection agent such as chlorine (traditional solution, but can affect the taste of the water) or chloramine (used more often nowadays since it has less taste) that stays in the water and keeps it safe for a period of time, typically 5-7 days depending upon the strength and chemical used. The water distribution systems (the pipes under the streets) are designed such that the water will reach the consumer well under this time period and so be safe at the point of use. In fact, looking at the color of your urine is considered a practical way to identify dehydration ( 6). The Health and Safety (Safety Signs and Signals) Regulations 1996 (the Safety Signs Regulations) implement European Council Directive 92/58/EEC on minimum requirements for the provision of safety signs at work. This guidance is aimed at helping employers meet their responsibilities under these Regulations. SummaryYou need to drink enough water to support your body's many functions. A part of this is recognising when your body needs you to drink more - for example, after it's lost more water on a hot day, after exercise, or following a bout of diarrhoea. See your GP if your symptoms continue despite drinking fluids, or if you suspect that your baby or toddler is dehydrated. Rarely, drinking more fluid than your body can process can reduce theamount of sodium (salt) in yourblood. This can lead to a serious and potentially fatal conditioncalled hyponatremia. If you start to feel discomfort and bloating from drinking, stop drinkingand allow time to recover. Illness

For example, it’s common to become dehydrated when you’re experiencing symptoms like diarrhea, vomiting, and high fever. One of the most common signs of dehydration is dry skin and lips and decreased skin elasticity ( 8).When you’re dehydrated, your blood becomes more concentrated, and therefore your blood volume (the total volume of blood in your body) drops. So when you don’t hydrate properly, your body goes through a thought process: What parts of the body need blood the most? “The heart is going to win out over the muscles,” says Dr. Smith, and inadequate blood flow to the muscles causes those muscle cramps. 8. Constipation Drink water. You could also try increasing your hydration with oral rehydration sachets — powders you mix in with your water. How can I help my dehydrated child get better at home? Severe: See a healthcare provider if your symptoms of dehydration are severe. Call 911, your local emergency services number or go to an emergency room. Warning people of hazards: Safety signs can warn people of potential hazards in the workplace, such as slippery floors, moving machinery, or hazardous chemicals. Warning signs can help people to take the necessary precautions to stay safe.

Dehydration is often the result of an illness, such as gastroenteritis, where fluid is lost through persistent bouts of diarrhoea and vomiting. Sweating Children and teenagers are particularly at risk because they may ignore the symptoms of dehydration, or not know how to recognise and treat them. AlcoholIf you suspect that you or your child is severely dehydrated, seek immediate medical attention. Signs of dehydration in kids include: babies and infants – they have a low body weight and are sensitive to even small amounts of fluid loss However, when you fail to drink enough to replenish the fluids lost through urination, sweating, and even breathing, you begin to enter a state of dehydration. Being dehydrated doesn’t just make you feel thirsty—it can also have a major impact on how your entire body functions. Here’s what you should know. How much water should you drink a day?
