Some reviewers out there speculated that MWND changed its composition for Act 10 because the press release no longer mentioned the whiskey was finished in French Oak barrels. I don’t think that is the case, though. In the years prior, I’ve always been told that High West was using both Ruby and Tawny Port casks to finish MWND in. Act” and “Scene” reference the release and bottling run. This is the 9th release (the Act) bottled on the 4th day (the Scene) of this MWND production. So just because High West doesn’t necessarily use the term French Oak anymore doesn’t mean that they did some big change. But tasting each one might reveal more about what’s true and what’s not true. There was no A Midwinter Night’s Dram available in the saloon at the time – or I don’t remember it in the flight we tasted, in any case – but they did have Double Rye! and Rendezvous Rye. My brother and I had an enjoyable visit, and we enjoyed the the flight. Most aromas are faint but I do get notes of sherry wine, which I am sure is due to the port barrel finishing. I also sense dusty grain, some tobacco laid out in the sun to dry, red grapes and plump gourmet raisins nestled in a mixture of bready cinnamon and rye. The sweets are faint as well, just a touch of light vanilla, some nearly burnt brown sugar, and roasted hazel and pinenuts. Even the earthy woodiness is muted, with just the faint aroma of seasoned wood toasted to a light char coming through. HIGH WEST A MIDWINTER NIGHTS DRAM ACT 9 SCENE 4 PALATE: As the session goes on, more botanical notes pop up with a couple of herbal flavors showing the way. Almost like drinking a green health drink of sorts with mint, cucumber, wheatgrass and the like. The “red” notes still linger though and make the each sip extra special. Nose: The nose is amazing and starts off this 6-way comparison on the right foot. Stewed stone fruits, apple cider vinegar and sweet port wine provide a complex and rich scent that beautifully accompany the rye whiskey scents of pine, ginger tea and dill. We’re likely witnessing MWND’s twilight years as it rides off into the sunset of famous whiskies that just couldn’t maintain their once-hallowed status.

Flavor Profile

Nose: The nose on this one does not seem nearly as sharp and powerful as Act 5. There are scents of sweet vanilla, light herbal notes like mint and tarragon, wildflower honey, sweet hay and cherry blossoms. Scents of a “Hot Toddy” also prevail. I’m not exaggerating when I say that those old barrels of Barton were in almost EVERYTHING they made unless it was labeled as a bourbon. Even Bourye contained this Barton rye for a long time! I struggled to sense the underlying rye components in last year’s Act 10, and fortunately, Act 11 doesn’t lose that influence in the wine notes. There’s noticeable rye spice here from the base of Rendezvous Rye, enough that it’s possible to differentiate the 95/5 mash bill MGP whiskey from the 80/20 in-house High West distillate. Some of the earlier releases (the “Act” corresponds with the annual release) were made with High West’s Rendezvous blend when it featured a hefty amount of 16 year-old, Barton-sourced rye; the rest of the blend was somewhat younger rye from Indiana’s MGP. High West has been very transparent about bottle count for this release in recent years. With a nearly 40 percent increase in production for 2023, hopes are a bit higher that fans can snag a bottle for close to retail pricing, though don’t be surprised to see markups in some locations.
