Last, but not least, here’s my favorite makeup book of all times: Be Your Own Makeup Artist . I am so proud to have written and published this book, and am SO honored that it has made it’s way into cosmetology school curriculum. Photo by Michelle Scott Photography; Event Planning by Dash Event Company; Headpiece by Maria Sn Novias via WildBride Mia: I was sixteen when I first realized my mom was more concerned about my appearance than I was… I’ll be talking to my mom and realize she hasn’t heard a word because she’s studying my face to see if the foundation I’m using is a good match for my skin tone.” This is another quintessential coffee table book for makeup enthusiasts and should be part of every beauty lover’s book collection. 5. Robert Jones’ Makeup Masterclass by Robert Jones

The book that started it all for me. I was already dabbling with makeup, but I really went down the rabbithole when I received this book as a gift. The sister duo who are the team behindPixiwooscreated this great makeup manual that links directly with the looks they create in the videos. I really like the Chapman sisters’ approach to makeup: they demystify the processes and techniques, and, like Sali Hughes above, have a really affordable approach to the brands they recommend. This would be a great gift for makeup-loving friends of all ages. Art and MakeUp by Lan Nguyen-Grealis Face Paint is a historical look at how we have used makeup to represent ourselves and understand each other socially. If you want to go more natural and avoid chemicals, this is the perfect guide! The recipes are super easy, and there are lots of them, so you can spend a lot of time going through this book.

Makeup for Women Over 50: A Guide From a Beauty Industry Makeup for Women Over 50: A Guide From a Beauty Industry

You will learn how to mix flesh tones using only primary colors, you’ll find out the reason for variations in skin colors and undertones, and you’ll be able to identify flattering shades for the eyes, lips, and cheeks for all skin tones. I really feel that anyone who wants to learn more about color theory and how it affects the quality of your makeup should own this book. Jemma Kidd Make-up Masterclass: Beauty Bible of Professional Techniques and Wearable Looks, by Jemma Kidd Oh, and don’t forget to read my post on 18 Must-Have Beauty Books for the Beauty Lover– a new post with books that are not mentioned here! The book itself is fantastic. So many makeup books look fantastic, but don't have any real substance. Chris Scott's book not only discusses various techniques, it provides step-by-step guidance on how to take care of your skin, prime lips and eyes and apply stains and shadows, and form a makeup strategy using model's various facial shapes. Chris supplements the book with a set of super-helpful how-to videos here. And, please don't be impressed---we totally had to look on Wikipedia to figure out what a "Marchioness" is. This is a great book with practical andaccessibleadvice for creating effective eye makeup for botheverydayand fancy nights out. This has helped me loads as I try to explore more creative uses of theeleventymillion eyeshadows I own. Pretty Iconic by Sali Hughes But, this book is about so much more than just choosing the right makeup and learning how to wear it. It is a comprehensive makeup guide for makeup beginners, created for everyone, gender-neutral, and that considers every skin tone. Besides, Be Your Own Makeup Artist is full of beautiful pictures and sketches to help you understand everything, even if you’re a true beginner. Makeup Ideas for Every Kind of Bride 60 Wedding Makeup Ideas for Every Kind of Bride

Make-Up Designory's Beauty Make-Up is pretty straight-forward---base, brows, eyes, cheeks, lips---but it includes sections on applying makeup to mature models, applying makeup via airbrush, and working with brides. You get the sense that they borrowed from their live classes to write the book, and that's a good thing. There's a (very) small chapter on actually working in the beauty biz, but it's not long enough for us to include it in our section titled... Books for Aspiring Makeup Artists and the Business End of Things Photo by Rachel Rodgers Photography; Veil by Ryan and Walter; Hair by Senada K. Ceka; Makeup by D’Amelio Cosmetics Of all the books in our list, this is one most famous, and in our opinion, it is DEFINITELY worth a read. Plus, special bonus: the book is spiral bound. Why isn't every single book about makeup spiral bound? WHY? It's a huge plus, because it makes the book waaaaay easier use to use when you're practicing the techniques in the book. You won't have to weight both sides of the book down with a shoe or something. Fabulous Discoveries

In Kattie Middleton’s book, she helps professionals and beginners train their eyes to understand and recognize distinctions in color. Since everyone has different skin tones and undertones, understanding how color theory is applied to makeup can really help you step up your game. So, if you were sitting there thinking, "These all sound like great books about makeup, but I'm looking for something written by a woman who is English royalty," then Jemma Kidd Make-up Masterclass: Beauty Bible of Professional Techniques and Wearable Looks is your book.

Photo by Du Soleil Photographie; Event Planning by Britt Lemenager of Everlemon Events; Hair by Roxy Gorman; Makeup by Seth Richardson This is another book that focuses on the business side of makeup. We've included it because it's a more "nuts and bolts" approach to the career, and discusses building a kit, training, and portfolio building.

The book also has plenty of guidance on how to work with brides, and that's a fantastic addition, because even if you're NOT interested in wedding makeup, it's at least something you should know about. We're friends with a few makeup artists who started out and were absolutely certain they wanted to do fashion makeup, got a few fashion makeup gigs, hated it, and are now making a great living doing wedding makeup. PHOTO BY JOSEPH NANCE & FRANCO GIOMI/IMAGEN; Event Planning by Saguzo Eventos; Hair by Vilma Coy; Makeup by Jocelyn Biga
