Instead, Imrie strives to uplift the female immigrant story, not only in correlation to the Titanic disaster but also at the societal level, reminding readers that these are the voices history has overlooked or oppressed and the present has the power to finally edify. After their short romance and marriage and working together as tailors, things quickly turned toxic. The Titanic finally disappeared beneath the waves, some two hours and forty minutes after striking the iceberg. Would their mother ever be able to trace them, and if they lived or died would she be able to claim them as hers as the male dominant society was unwilling to identify her as an acceptable mother.

Nice, France, 1911: After three years of marriage, young seamstress Marcela Caretto has finally had enough. Nicole Yurcaba (Ukrainian: Нікола Юрцаба–Nikola Yurtsaba) is a Ukrainian (Hutsul/Lemko) American poet and essayist. Despite the novel’s rather drawn-out length and plot, it is ultimately Marcela’s story that Celia Imrie’s Orphans of the Storm uncovers as it portrays a feminine fortitude uncharacteristic of the Edwardian Era. It's about Marcella and her struggles as a mother and wife, a struggle that is deeply, deeply resonant today. In fact, it took me almost a week to read part 1, whereas I read parts 2 and 3 across an evening and morning. The rest of the book recounts the international press coverage the case attracted and the outcomes for Margaret and Marcella – to recount more would be a spoiler! While the beginning of their marriage is one from the fairy tales, or, rather, one any woman of the Edwardian Era would have dreamed of, Michel’s evil nature and his threatening, hidden past reveals itself after the birth of their two sons — Michel Marcel and Edmond. The sections on The Titanic and afterwards are done very well and this part of the book is really good. Set aboard the fateful 1912 voyage of RMS Titanic, Imrie’s richly atmospheric period novel entwines the destinies of a group of sharply drawn characters with humanity, compassion and page-turning aplomb.

The Titanic took on water some fifteen times faster than could be pumped out, with the hull damage proving too extensive for the vessel's watertight bulkheads to keep the flooding from spreading across the liner's compartmentalised lower decks. Ten minutes later, the liner's angle in the water increased rapidly, ultimately reaching over 30 degrees, as water reached previously unflooded parts of the ship through deck hatches.

From the Sunday Times bestselling author, Celia Imrie, Orphans of the Storm dives into the waters of the past to unearth a sweeping, epic tale of the sinking of the Titanic that radiates with humanity and hums with life. The third main character is Margaret, another 21 year old, single and flighty, an American travelling around Europe and bored.

Also, if you picked up this book because you wanted an interesting read about The Titanic and/or two orphans (as the title and cover of the book would suggest) then be warned that they don't set foot on the flippin' boat until page 190 and the section of the story that concerns the aforementioned orphans goes from 'orphaned in the wreck of The Titanic' to neat resolution in just 100 pages (or, in other words, a mere 25% of the book). It is beyond frustrating to see how little attitudes have changed, despite the hordes of evidence that Michael was a vile, abusive narcissist, it is constantly with him that we see the authorities side. I asked my friends to clean my house instead of throwing me a baby shower - every mother-to-be should have a nesting party!I didn't like Margaret; all she seemed interested in was to be recognised for her rescuing the children.

For anyone who is still amazed and wondered by the Titanic then perhaps this is not the book for you. Michel’s solution is simple: using a false identity for himself and his sons, he acquires passage to the United States of America. The characters were also written incredibly well and imbued with the humanity (and flaws) that I found brought realism to their narrative. Fleeing divorce, a custody battle, and bankruptcy in Nice, with more than 30,000 embezzled francs, Michael kidnaps the boys and, impersonating a business associate, boards the RMS Titanic, where his fateful comeuppance awaits.
