Oddly I feel like this movie pairs really well with Karate Kid III. This film also makes me realize how utterly lame The Next Karate Kid was, swap Mako with Mr. Miyagi and you could make a very similar movie. This is also by far Jonathan Brandis's best film, his acting in this is never cheesy, just totally natural and believable, he's obviously more attractive than a typical nerd but he really sells the invalide weakling character in his acting. I can describe the rest of the plot. Or you can decide for yourself if Barry becomes a junior karate master and defeats the class bully in the big match at the end of the movie. If I supply additional information, such as that*Joe Piscopo*plays the brutal, psychotic head of a local karate school, or that Barry has a crush on a girl in his class, you might be able to intuit additional developments. The fantasy scenes in this are so well done, there's a ton of detail and creativity in them it would be easy to come off lame if it looked cheap, it's almost like they shot 7 other different mini films (Aaron Norris talks about this in the commentary). Gotta love having the child actor partaking in gunplay during the action scenes, likely to never see something like this ever again. It's easy to draw comparisons to Karate Kid, but this movie definitely has it's own energy and I didn't feel even once they were ripping anything off. Barry (Jonathan Brandis) is a teenager struggling with the loss of his mother and problems with asthma, having difficulty communicating with his with producer Don Carmody, which was forged over several installments of the "Porky's" franchise.
