My observation however is that while the design of the grip gives a feel like handling a DSLR, it would have been nice if the shutter button also had a half-stop press feature for focusing before firing away and it could also have benefitted in providing cases for other flagship smartphones that have great cameras.

With a single press, you can take a photo; with a longer press, begin capturing video. Setting up the shutter takes less than 30 seconds and requires simply using the iPhone's Bluetooth tool.
