Let’s look at the positives first: Those are some clean sherry casks. No sulphur at all, which for me has been a bit of an issue over recent years with some of the sherry-dominant Springbank releases. Yeah, quite the contrast in this Springbank. You’re always on a hiding to nothing reviewing releases such as these given the focus on value and investment. Inflated scores to keep those margins profitable. My thanks to Archie for opening his bottle and providing a generous sample in return for my opinion. Finish: Medium in length with a continuation of the fruit theme. Lingering notes of peach pie with some sweet vanilla cream topping. There’s also some amaretto-like sweetness with a slight contrasting bitterness that adds a bit of depth. The finish tapers off with more of the spice notes from the palate. Rating: 7/10 Nose - Juicy red grapes, raspberries and redcurrants followed by stewed strawberries and mint humbugs.

Hazelburn is the standard release of Springbank’s unpeated malt whisky line. It is triple distilled and as always, bottled without chill filtration or added coloring. Hazelburn is named after the Hazelburn Distillery which operated in Campbeltown from 1825 to 1925. At one point, they were the town’s largest producer of Scotch whisky. Tasting Notes Hazelburn 10 Year Old, distilled at the revered Springbank Distillery, is one of the few purely unpeated whiskies to emerge from the Campbeltown region. Triple-distilled for added smoothness and clarity of flavor, it is a testament to traditional Scottish whisky-making. The spirit captures the essence of its maritime roots while offering a sweeter and lighter profile compared to its peatier cousins.

Year Old: Matured in American oak barrels, this whisky has a slightly salty nose with hints of red apple, vanilla, and orange peel.This Whisky has spent all of its 21 years in an ex-bourbon hogshead. The triple distillation renders the Whisky lighter and softer than its double distilled cousin, and the absence of peat allows the subtler flavours to sing more clearly. The taste is pretty simple but neat with hints of nice sweet barley again followed by vanilla, dried bananas and apricots. The finish is short to medium, little bit tannic, oaky with notes of baking spices, honeycake and waxy apricots.

With a current production level of 500 000 litres and a staff of just seven employees, Glen Scotia is one of the smallest distilleries in Scotland. Affectionately known as Old Scotia or The Scotia, Glen Scotia was founded in 1932 and has changed hands several times. Since its most recent acquisition by Loch Lomond Distillers, the distillery has seen major investments that have allowed it to regain its status as a leading whisky producer. Glen Scotia Single Malt Whiskies So, it was a multi-faceted ‘perfect storm’ of factors all combined to leave the Campbeltown whisky industry devastated and by the year 2000, only 2 working distilleries remained. It was around this time the Scotch Whisky Association began to seriously discuss ‘declassifying’ Campbeltown as an official whisky region.

Springbank produces three distinct variations of single malt whiskies, each created through subtle tweaking at various stages of the production process. The traditional character and style of Springbank whiskies include smoke, peach, apple, nutmeg, earth, and wet wool. Springbank’s whiskies include: Unpeated, distilled three times for ultimate smoothness, and then matured in pure Bourbon casks for a decade; Hazelburn 10 Year Old whisky tastes like a picnic of Werther’s Original, cinnamon buns, cocoa-dusted salted chocolate truffles and baguette with olive oil served up in a pear orchard. A joyful dram for summer days and watching the sun go down. Palate: Good mouthfeel paired with bright notes of vanilla and Crunchie bars. More lively fruit notes underneath. Sweet and tropical on the nose, notes of baked pineapple, lemon sherbert, honeycomb and dried orange peel introduce this light and delicate dram. Palate Kilkerran 12-Year-Old: With a nose of dominant oak toasted marshmallows, and cherries, and citrus, vanilla, and butterscotch flavours, this whisky also features the oiliness and saltiness associated with a traditional Campbeltown dram.
