It is idle to seek deep spiritual causes for literary phenomena which mere incompetence can explain. It's also the story of how romantic love came to be considered a subject of literature - or even considered at all.

In fact, I had serious doubts about the filmmakers ability to pull all of the disparate plot threads together into some sort of comprehensible resolution. Lewis' attempt here is to show how the idea of love changed from pre-Courtly Love through post-Spenser and, for the most part, he does a good job. Even though Troilus is a Trojan hero at war with the Greeks, for all practical purposes he is a Christian knight, “a new Launcelot” (220). I hope that it does, though only if the high standards can be retained - which I believe was certainly achieved in 'Allegory Of Love. S. Lewis ( ISBN 0192812203), is an exploration of the allegorical treatment of love in the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, which was published on 21 May 1936.

Yet, at least from the parts analyzing books that I'd actually read, it really is quite a good book--and it's neat to see Lewis as the literary critic, not simply as the theologian or novelist. Outdated now, but still one of those things that you probably should read if you're doing anything about courtly love. The first chapter traces the history of love poetry to the development of what we term ‘courtly love’, and the second traces the history of allegory. The professor angle is particularly interesting since one of the suspects - Norman Deering - is played by James Fox, Laurence's real-life father.

The tremendous amount of information, the brilliance of the ideas, the felicitous phrasing and always delightful style, all combine to make The Allegory of Love a really outstanding contribution to medieval studies. The remaining chapters, drawing on the points made in the first two, examine the use of allegory and personification in the depiction of love in a selection of poetic works, beginning with the Roman de la Rose. Ich bin ein CS Lewis - Fan (besitze an die 40 Bücher - SF, Essays, Theologie, Romane, Poesie, Kinderbücher (Narnia).

Proclaimed, "an Austenesque box of bonbons" by the Seattle Times, join 1000s of satisfied readers who have made this short story collection a bestseller. I loved the fantasy aspects of this storyline, and as these great murder mysteries often do, the wonderful use of metaphor.

Love is the commonest these of serious imaginative literature and is still generally regarded as anble and ennbling passion.

In an amusing twist Lewis also mentioned that Faerie Queen's subtle allegorical reality is the sort that will forever please children and laymen, but will baffle the literary and scholars. I believe that the pieces of this story all came together perfectly in the end, and I would encourage any murder mystery fan to see this, even if they haven't seen another Lewis episode before. S. Lewis' reputation as a critic of medieval and renaissance literature; in the original, medieval, sense, it was the "piece" that marked his transition from Apprentice to Master.
