The Canon 1200D’s combined battery and card compartment is in the base of the grip. Both the D3300 and Sony A3000 have separate card compartments accessed via a side door, but Canon did away with this arrangement on the earlier T3 / 1100D. It keeps the cost down, but makes it impossible to change the card with the camera mounted on a tripod. The available white balance settings are Auto, Daylight, Shade, Cloudy, Tungsten, Fluorescent, Flash and Custom; there is no way to enter a Kelvin value manually. You can fine-tune any of the presets using the White Balance Correction feature. The ISO speed can be changed by pressing the ISO button and turning the control wheel or using the arrow buttons on the navigation pad. You do not have to hold down the button while changing the setting. The ISO speed can be set from ISO 100 to ISO 6400 in full-stop increments, and Auto ISO is also available. The chosen ISO speed is also displayed in the viewfinder. The Canon EOS 1200D's maximum shutter speed is 30 seconds and there's a Bulb mode for even longer exposures, which is excellent news if you're seriously interested in night photography. The Canon EOS T5 / 1200D has a lot to recommend it in handling terms as an introduction to DSLR photography. The controls are nice and big, clearly labelled, and well spaced. The menu system is clear, logically organised and easily navigable. And Canon’s Q menu has incrementally improved over the years to the point where it’s arguably one of the best methods for changing shooting settings on a non touch-screen camera. A flap on the left side of the T5 / 1200D’s body conceals the camera’s ports – a mini HDMI connector and USB port plus a remote control terminal compatible with the RS60-E3 cable remote, but the T5 / 1200D isn’t compatible with Canon wireless remote controllers. Whether you're an amateur or a professional, to most photographers a new digital SLR means a straight choice between Nikon and Canon.

There's a host of scene modes including Flash Off, Portrait, Landscape, Sports, Night Portrait and, oddly enough for an interchangeable-lens camera, a close-up mode as well. The majority of these scene modes allow users who do not want to fiddle with shutter speeds, f-stops, white balance or ISO settings to let the camera know what type of photo they are about to take, which helps the EOS 1200D / Rebel T5 to optimise these settings for that particular subject. We struggled to see the point of the close-up mode though, as the quality of one's close-up shots depends more on the use of the right kinds of accessory - such as a macro lens and possibly a ring flash - than any camera setting. The now established Feature Guide option in the EOS 1200D’s menu system usefully provides a brief description of each setting and its effect.All of the sample images in this review were taken using the 18 megapixel Fine JPEG setting, which gives an average image size of around 6Mb. The out-of-camera JPEGs are quite soft and at the default sharpening setting and benefit from some further sharpening in a program like Adobe Photoshop. You can also change the in-camera sharpening level to suit your tastes via the Picture Style options. That’s a little less powerful than the Nikon D3300’s built-in flash which has a Guide Number of 12 and also offers wireless control with compatible Nikon units. With a GN of 9.2 the Sony A3000’s built-in flash has the same power output as the T5 / 1200. Both the T5 / 1200D and D3300 have a hotshoe, as does the Sony A3000, but the latter is Sony’s multi-interface shoe which can take an external flash as well as other accessories.
