In this post I’ll go through their uses and what I think are the best and what to avoid based on my experiences over the years. Thus, when you turn on the heat, either the entire radiator will feel cold or the top of the radiator will feel cold while the bottom feels warm. Bleeding the coolant system for a car where the engine and radiator are at opposite ends can be difficult.

Radiator Keys: The Best (and Worst) for Bleeding and Fixing Radiator Keys: The Best (and Worst) for Bleeding and Fixing

Once you’ve finished bleeding the radiator, you can go and repeat the procedure on all the other radiators in your home that require bleeding.

I have two radiators where the bleed screws are missing therefore I cannot put my heating on due to these two simple screws. If the radiators on the upper floors of your house aren't heating up but the radiators on the lower floors are, your heating system may not be operating at a high enough pressure to get hot water to the top floors of your house. Every home should have a radiator bleed key for bleeding radiators (and sometimes venting) for if and when they ever need to. Some modern radiators are equipped with valves that are designed to be turned with a simple flathead screwdriver.

Go back to your lockshield valve and make the same number of turns with your spanner but this time turn the spindle anticlockwise. Find out how to remove air locks and avoid overheating with our guide on how to bleed a car radiator. If it’s cold at the top and hot at the bottom, there’s likely to be a build-up of air in the system. It usually only takes between 20 and 30 seconds to bleed a radiator 1, although it can take longer if the radiator is particularly large or if there is a lot of air trapped inside. Thankfully, replacing a radiator bleed valve is not like replacing a radiator valve and you do not need to remove the radiator. When radiators need bleeding, it’s because there’s trapped air inside, stopping warm water circulating around. To bleed a radiator, you need to first identify that it is a hot water radiator (rather than a steam-based one), turn off your central heating to avoid scalding, lay down towels to protect against water damage, and use a bleed key to open the bleed valve in your radiator, to release the trapped air inside. You can also go for a self bleed automatic bleed valve which does the work for you for only a couple of quid more. If you have a manual valve on the flow pipe, you also need to turn this back on but if you have a TRV on the flow pipe then just reverse the steps you took to turn it off. It comes in handy for rear access bleed valves and getting in tight spaces when a standard type key is too big.

How to Replace a Radiator Bleed Valve | UK Radiators

Once the valve is securely in place and closed, you need to bleed the radiator to remove any air that entered when you swapped out the old valve. Duston specializes in leading a team that handles a variety of automotive repairs including replacing spark plugs, front and rear brake pads, fuel pumps, car batteries, alternators, timing belts, and starter motors. Here I’ll teach you how to replace a radiator bleed valve from what I’ve learned over the years on everyday jobs. It is a shame to have to throw away a perfectly good radiator just because the bleed screw doesn't work anymore.

For example, if you have a Worcester boiler, the slot will have an open and closed padlock sign on it. It is particularly important to bleed your radiators (release air trapped inside them so that heat can circulate properly) because inefficient heating is a massive money drain.
