Dr. Zaius: Of that, I am sure. All my life I've awaited your coming and dreaded it. Like death itself. The ape actors were not given any specific movement training, but both Roddy McDowall and Kim Hunter spent time studying chimpanzees in their local zoos before shooting began; Roddy at the LA Zoo or San Diego Zoo, and Kim spending so much time observing the solitary chimp in the Bronx Zoo that he started to defiantly hide from her. [33] "I just spent hours with him and he'd get furious with me... Of course I also read Pierre Boulle's book before going out, to kind of understand his intention as well as the script we were going to be working with." [34] The Fox Ranch lake, by which the Ape City was built, had been formed 1901 by the building of a dam across Malibu Creek. [10]

For the film’s sequel, Beneath the Planet of the Apes, the costuming style would stay almost the same. Most of the same color palettes and materials were used, adding continuity to the piece. The basic design elements, the cut and shape of the garments, also stayed the same, adding consistency to the aesthetic. The viewer still feels as though they are on the planet of the apes. When Rod Serling came up with the ending it was generally agreed that we had to do everything we could to make it as unearthly as possible. We didn't want to give away the ending. So, the challenge was to make up a style of life that these people might have developed because they would be strong, good with their hands. We kind of invented an architecture that was as far from anything Earth-like as we could go. We were inspired by Gaudi, and the Goreme Valley in Turkey. I had an artist, Meutner Hubner [sic] , still a very famous and fine motion picture illustrator, putting all those pieces of research together to get a look, having no idea how we would ultimately build it." - William Creber [11] Natalie Wood had been suggested to play Zira, and Ingrid Bergman apparently regretted turning down the part, but Julie Harris was ultimately cast in the role. However, Harris was anxious about the makeup and was later replaced by Kim Hunter. [23]Leong, Anthony. "Those Damned Dirty Apes!". www.mediacircus.net. At 66 years of age, director of photography Leon Shamroy refused to climb the structure, while the assistant director had a phobia of heights. Instead, Franklin Schaffner and William Creber filmed the perspective shot. [26] Planet of the Apes ' success launched a franchise, [8] including four sequels, as well as a television series, animated series, comic books, and various merchandising. In particular, Roddy McDowall had a long-running relationship with the franchise, appearing in four of the original five films (he was absent from the second film, Beneath the Planet of the Apes, in which he was replaced by David Watson in the role of Cornelius) and also in the television series. The original film series was followed by Tim Burton's remake of the same name in 2001 and a reboot series, which began with Rise of the Planet of the Apes in 2011. [9] Plot [ edit ] Teaser of the film John Chambers was widely suspected of having created the Sasquatch in the famous Patterson/Gimlin 'Bigfoot' film from October 1967, shortly after filming was completed on Planet of the Apes, but he always denied this. Chambers did however create the 'Burbank Bigfoot' - a large plaster prop intended to imitate a real Bigfoot-like creature for showman Jerry Malone's carnival tour - from a body-cast of actor Richard Kiel while working in partnership with 'Don Post Studios' in the 1960s. He also engineered and designed a gorilla for a wax museum in Canada during this time, all of which may have contributed to the well-known rumour. (more) A huge ‘claw’-like exhibit in the ape museum was a prop originally used as the foot of the alien monster in the 1956 film Forbidden Planet. [9] The words "Human see, human do" are a reference to the song "Monkey see, momkey do," a childrens song with simple wording that goes like this: "The human claps, claps, claps her hands,/The monkey claps, claps, claps her hands./Monkey see, Monkey do,/Monkey do the same as you!" The men travel through desolate wasteland, coming across eerie scarecrow-like figures and a freshwater lake with lush vegetation. While swimming, the men's clothes are stolen and shredded by primitive mute humans. Soon after, armed gorillas raid a cornfield where the humans are gathering food. Taylor is shot in the throat as he and the others are captured. Dodge is killed and Landon is rendered unconscious in the chaos. Taylor is taken to Ape City. Two chimpanzees, animal psychologist Zira and surgeon Galen, save Taylor's life, though his throat injury renders him temporarily mute. Taylor: And there's just one last item: immortality. You wanted to live forever, didn't you? Well, you damn near made it. Except for me and Dodge, you've lived longer than anyone ever born. And with our lovely Lieutenant Stewart dead, looks like you're the last of the line. You got what you wanted, tiger. How does that taste?

Charlton Heston noted, as late as April 17, 1967, that Harris and Robinson were still in the cast, but that they looked unlikely to remain. He also suggested that Linda Harrison had still not been cast as Nova, just a month before shooting started on May 21: "The casting problem's really Nova: who will do it, and how naked can she be. The tests I saw were not good." [23] Webb, Gordon C. (July 1998). "30 Years Later: Rod Serling's Settling the Debate over Who Wrote What, and When". www.rodserling.com. In his review for The National Observer, critic Clifford Ridley commented, "The Flintstonish sets are craggy, ponderous things - suggesting the American Southwest, The Roman Forum, and so on, but seldom creating a feeling that we are anywhere but on quite familiar terrain.” [44] Much of Planet of the Apes was filmed on location in the Arizona desert, in the middle of summer, with temperatures exceeding 100 degrees making the costumes and make-up even more excruciating to wear.
