Description

Whether I am coloring frosting, cookie dough or cake batter, I always use gel colors, which are highly concentrated and produce vibrant colors without making them thinner.

Valentine's Day – Make it with red Jello and cover with pink whipped cream and Valentine sprinkles. Once you’ve prepared the cake batter, divide the batter into thirds about 1 2/3 cups per color. Leaving one bowl undyed for the white cake.Add milk or powdered sugar as needed to make a smooth frosting. Beat on high for 2 minutes, until light and fluffy. It’s hard to say exactly how much food coloring you’ll need to add. Add a few drops or gel food coloring at a time until the color is as deep as you’d like it to be. In a large mixing bowl, combine the sugar, vegetable oil, eggs and vanilla extract. Beat on medium speed until the eggs and oil are well incorporated about 2 minutes. Scrape down the bowl as needed. Next mix in the sour cream and beat until well combined. Vanilla Buttercream. Use 1/2 the recipe for a two-layer 6-inch cake or the full recipe for a two-layer 8-inch cake. While you may not like the idea of using vegetable shortening in your frosting, I recommend using half butter and half shortening for a whiter color. This is a red white and blue cake, after all, and it won’t look as nice if the buttercream is yellow.

You might also love these high altitude recipes for blueberry ice cream, cherry cobbler, cherry crumb pie, and blueberry lattice pie. My not-so-secret secret to this cake being moist while also having a delicate crumb is these two things; cake flour and buttermilk. The cake flour (in my opinion) is crucial to the texture and I personally wouldn’t substitute all-purpose in it’s place. I mean, you can but there’s a reason why cake flour exists.. for cakes!🥰 Make the Batter: Start by creaming together the butter and sugar using anelectric mixerat medium speed. Add the eggs, one at a time, incorporating each before adding the next. Add the vanilla extract, and beat until well-blended. Make ahead of time. Make the cake rounds ahead of time and store them until ready to assemble and decorate the cake. Prepare to Bake a Layer Cake: Preheat the oven and grease three9-inch panswith shortening or butter and dust with flour. You can also add parchment paper circles to the pans first to make the cakes super easy to remove later. Set the pans aside.Birthday Candles. For a festive touch, decorate your cake with some tall red white and blue birthday candles. I love Meri Meri candles, and I used some candles from this blue and green candle mix, as well as some shorter red candles I had on hand. BAKERS TIP for even batter layers: I’m not good at eye-balling the division of the batter to make three even portions. I pour the prepared batter into a 4-cup liquid measuring cup (I like OXO tilt measuring cupbecause it’s easy to see the measurements). Remember, all of the ingredient amounts you’ll need are in the printable recipe card below. How to Make Red White and Blue Poke Cake Buttermilk: Adding buttermilk to a cake recipe makes it extra soft and velvety. You can use regular whole milk in place of the buttermilk if you need to.

Use a cake leveler to cut the domes off the top of the cake. Place a dollop of frosting on your cake board and place the bottom layer of cake on top of that. This is IT! I used my homemade funfetti cake mix, swapped out the colorful sprinkles for patriotic ones and subbed in buttermilk for regular milk. That’s it! Now I haven’t had cake in a long time, but everyone here agreed that this cake was incredibly moist and delicious. I could think of about 6 different desserts I’d love to have at a BBQ, but cake is right up there on top. Imagine the looks on your friend’s faces when you slice into this cake to see three different colored layers of cake with the most beautiful frosting on top. Easter – Think pastels… Lemon, Berry Blue, Strawberry, Lime, and Grape Jello, along with Easter sprinkles, will make a beautiful Easter poke cake.STORE. To help the leftover cake last longer, remove any fresh fruit before storing it.Keep the cake in an airtight container(s) at room temperature for 3-5 days or in the fridge for 5-7 days. Red White and Blue Cake Ideas: Here are some of our favorite ways to add patriotic colors to our cake. Divide the batter evenly between two bowls. To one bowl, stir in 1/2 – 1 teaspoon “super red” gel food coloring. To the other bowl, stir in 1/2 – 3/4 teaspoon “royal blue” gel food coloring and 1/4 teaspoon “navy blue” gel food coloring. Crumb coat the cake. Use your piping bag to fill in any gaps between your layers. Using an offset spatula or icing smoother, wipe away the excess frosting, leaving you just enough to coat the outside of the cake. See the recipe card at the end of the post for the full ingredients list and instructions. Ingredients Cake

If desired, layer the cakes and add a crumb coating (light thin layer of frosting) over the entire cake. The light layer will help keep the cake from drying out and it can be kept in the fridge overnight. Maybe you’re making the cake a day or two ahead of your party, and need to store it safely, or maybe you need to store leftovers after the party’s over. Either way, here are the best tips for easy storage! Decorated and UncutLevel if needed: If your cakes come out domed you may need to level them using a serrated knife. Also, if the bottoms of the cakes are too brown for any reason, you can carefully slice off the brown layer to get perfectly colored cakes. I’ve found mainstream food dyes found in the grocery stores generally fade significantly when baked. I also love natural India Tree Dyes, but they do not produce the vivid colors I was seeking and fade when being baked. Finish frosting: Use the remaining frosting to frost the top and sides of the cake using your offset spatula. Once the sides of the cake are covered, use your icing smoother to remove any excess frosting.
