I’ve got an 80’s remixes stereo version of White Light and this song sounds way better if you ask me. This is a nice release for fans who already have superior sounding versions of the original albums and only want the extra studio material.

I can report- digital transfers or not- the sound is really excellent even on my basic turntable speaker setup. Another thing to consider is, according to some posters on the Steve Hoffman forums, this release wasn't even supposed to exist as a stand alone release, rather, as part of a 50th anniversary box set coming out in a month or so, but apparently was released by accident, or was possibly supposed to come out as a stand alone release at a later date, but someone messed up and released it early. The box is solid, the jackets are solid, the booklet is stellar and so far so are the pressings and sound. The "box" is flimsy cardboard, the 3rd and 4th album has the wrong label (should mgm, not Verve), the 3rd album's mono mix is just a lame fold-down (should have used the closet mix since that's never been reissued on vinyl), and the cover of the lost album is cheesy and contains the equally cheesy 80s mixes. The sound is not great, they sound like old jukebox singles, a bit rough, which may or may not add to authenticity. The Velvets weren't known for Audiophile recording methods, so I'll go out on a limb and say, this sounds like the VU.

My only complaint is that The Gift sounds muddy and you can’t make out a word of what John Cale is saying. The second lp is half fold down stereo and the others are stereo fold downs through the entire albums. Having said that I'm a sucker for any permutation of the VU1968/1969 tracks of their 'lost 4th album' on Verve and had to get this. Seems like they just stuck the same digital remasters they used for the CD reissue of the "The Velvet Underground" (third album).Agree with the other comment: the stereo pressing sounds excellent; as good as this album has ever sounded. And although Universal did get the CD box sets out for the 45th anniversary editions of each album, with the vinyl resurgence now in full swing, do we still have to settle for digital transfers on CD's, or digital transfers on vinyl as is the case here [Back to Black series here in Europe], or the Music on Vinyl releases (and I assume the Sundazed releases too)? But this set does obviously have a great many perks, including, as I've said before, the one record that has the radio spots, the two aborted singles, the booklet and the neat little postcard, which came as a delightful surprise, because it can now join my collection of musician postcards.

Known for Andy Warhol's artwork, often cited as one of the more important and influential groups of their era. If only a band of this much importance could have their catalogue handled with a little care, although that seems unlikely considering the mess that is the new VU box set. It was most likely pressed at United (where Universal farms out a lot of it's vinyl product), and although they're known for poor quality, this set (at least my copy) is fine - thick vinyl, free of defects, well-centered, and only the slightest amount of surface noise, which may be remedied by a cleaning. I mean cool if you still want fold downs, but if you think youre getting all dedicated mono , you are not. Daftest of all is that the cover for "Train round the bend" is the artwork from the 2016 repress: the original issue had the misprint "Train round the bond".For the cost that this box set is going for currently I have to say it's not totally worth getting unless you're one who HAS to have it regardless. of 4 sides are all available on the Velvet Underground s/t Super Deluxe version and aside from known songs like Foggy Notion, One of These Days, and Ocean, most were outtakes for good reason. The fourth side is great, but if you already have the 2xLP version of White Light/White Heat they're essentially redundant. I’d genuinely like to hear an original US pressing and see if it sounds any different than this one. Which, as I stated previously, most fans probably won't want to do just to get the extra material, as they may already have better versions of the original albums.
