Description

Another army of Cybermen invaded medieval England, they began converting the locals by creating large statues of themselves to make the locals gather to see them. When the Doctor and Amy Pond arrived, they activated the Cybermen's power systems and used electrical currents to disable the Cybermen. ( GAME: The Mazes of Time) In the Bernice Summerfield audio adventure The Crystal of Cantus, a Cyberman reveals that the organs of children who are too small to be fully cyber-converted are used in the creation of cybermats. The costume which Jon Pertwee wears on the cover is the same as he would wear in Death to the Daleks. This may be a complete coincidence as he'd also worn it for a story many month earlier, but it seems reasonable to date this image to the end of October 1973. One thing we do know is that it can't have been taken any later than the 9th November because this was the time at which the Dalek props were repainted silver for the forthcoming TV appearance on Exxilon.

The photos on the day were taken by Allan Ballard, a notable photographer who would go on to have a high profile career in music and fashion. For the 1973 Anniversary his images provided added quality to the special publication. He photographed a number of companions in interesting locations with a variety of old monster costumes. It seems fair to assume that in some corner of the costume department there was a rail filled with silver suits, and nearby there were various helmets and chest units on shelves. With so many costumes having been used in Tomb of the Cyberman, and a great deal more made in Invasion, there would have been quite some choice. This scarf is two earlier versions of the scarf joined together. However, for ‘Shada’ the scarf was given a major overhaul. Frayed sections were removed and crocheted together. The Radio Times in the 21st century still arranges its own shoots of Doctor Who monsters and actors. These shoots are usually excellent and they freshen up the tired old BBC publicity images which get endlessly recycled across every piece of official merchandise.

The return of Mondas to Earth's solar system saw the second recorded attempted Cybermen invasion of Earth, ( PROSE: Iceberg) although the Seventh Doctor believed it to be the first. ( COMIC: The Good Soldier) This occurred in December 1986, ( TV: The Tenth Planet, PROSE: Iceberg, Mondas Passing, AUDIO: The Reaping) the 1990s, ( PROSE: The Power of the Daleks) or 2000. ( PROSE: Doctor Who and the Tenth Planet, Doctor Who and the Tomb of the Cybermen) The Time of the Doctor" introduced a unique prototype Cyberman that was made of wood to avoid detection by the Church of the Papal Mainframe and equipped with blowtorches. Tom Baker is well known for his buccaneer style boots which he wore in many of his later episodes, but he also wore a pair of suede style knee length boots in only one story "The Face of Evil". The use of the Controller body also explains why in the Mystery photo the chest unit is wrapped round the body with an elastic band - the Cyber Controller never had a chest unit, so there would have been no attachment points on the fabric. This makes the unit hang lower and adds to the unusual appearance as it becomes more like a "belly unit". Items from the 1960’s are amongst the rarest of all Dr Who props and costumes, with only a hand full know to exist worldwide, even the BBC only has one or two pieces in its archive. Both feet are about 20 inches long and give some indication to just how impresive the monster must have been! it was operated by two actors inside the costume simular to a pantomime horse. Jon Green pointed out further evidence of the lasting legacy of the photo shoots featuring the hybrid costumes. The costume is in fantastic condition considering it is over 20 years old the foam latex still being very soft and supple, it is common with foam latex for it to start to crystallize and crumple, this happens if it is exposed to UV light or extremes of temperature. Items made from foam latex must be displayed in a suitable environment to preserve them for future generations. This broadcast is for human kind. Cybermen now occupy every land mass on this planet, but you need not fear. Cybermen will remove fear. Cybermen will remove sex and class and colour and creed. You will become identical. You will become like us." Cyber-Leader One [src]

On the 14th Feb 1974 there was a photocall in advance of contracts being signed that would confirm new Doctor. Tom Baker was wearing a curiously festive jumper but that's nothing compared to the eye-opening nature of the Cyberman assembled for the occasion. On the Moon in 2070, Cybermen could produce arcs of electricity from their hands to stun, disable and kill. ( TV: The Tomb of the Cybermen) They also possessed a cannon that could operate in the vacuum of space. The virus Neurotrope X was used by Cybermen to incapacitate humans. ( TV: The Moonbase) Cybermats were sometimes used to spread this virus amongst a population. ( TV: Revenge of the Cybermen)

In the ensuing 3W Institute Affair, ( PROSE: Missy on Trial) the institute was discovered by Clara Oswald and the Twelfth Doctor, who were trying to find Danny Pink, who was also uploaded to the Nethersphere upon death. Missy activated the tanks, and drained away the dark water, revealing the Cybermen. They were then released, flying into the sky and exploding over major populated areas, creating clouds to produce cyber-pollen for converting those who had not been preserved. Missy also planned for a next wave of pollen to kill and convert every human on Earth. The Cyber-Army was offered by Missy as a " gift" to tempt the Doctor to enforce " good" throughout the universe. This was rejected by the Doctor, who maintained that he was just "an idiot" who "help[ed] out" before handing control of the army to the cyber-converted Danny Pink, who had the Cybermen fly into the clouds and self-destruct, destroying both them and the clouds. Missy teleported away after the cyber-converted Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart fired his wrist-blaster at her, powering her vortex manipulator. ( TV: Dark Water, Death in Heaven, The Witch's Familiar)

But that brings us to the matter of the next hybrid - the one on the rear cover of that very same magazine - and perhaps the most significant Cyberman ever cobbled together. This costume also shows repairs had been carried out. The original rods connecting the body and the knees had gone and instead a length of flexible metal hose had been used. Strangest of all, the replacement link positions on the body were the balls used in the Moonbase/Tomb costumes. It makes you wonder what state other costumes were in if such spares were freely available. It is a strange sight to see the second generation of Cybermen costumes in full colour in the 1970s, given that a third generation had been introduced before the end of the 60s. The narrow heads which featured on three occasions with Troughton are particularly distinctive.
