Nominees" (Press release). International Press Academy. Archived from the original on 22 December 2022 . Retrieved 8 December 2022. That segment of the story specifically highlights the place of “OFWs,” or Overseas Filipino Workers, a well-established category of migrant workers living and working outside their home country, and often taking menial working-class jobs regardless of their education or past work experience. De Leon says OFWs were a particular focus for Östlund in conceiving the film. Given De Leon’s elaborate fantasies about Abigail’s past, does she have fantasies about her future after the end of the movie as well? Zilko, Christian (11 December 2022). But then on a film like Ruben’s, you’re being used all the time and you’re striving to be great in every way,” he goes on. “Your energy is depleted at the end of the day, you feel shattered, but it feels worth it.” Triangle of Sadness never really finds its own voice as it first introduces a lot of oblivious characters, who all come across as thin stereotypes we have seen many times over in countless movies, and then puts them into situations that are what you'd expect them to get into. There is the dumb and jealous male model and his flirtatious girlfriend. There is the rich and loud Russian. There is the drunk captain. There is the prim head of ship staff. There is the lovely British couple who got rich selling grenades. Giardina, Carolyn (9 January 2023). " 'Everything Everywhere All At Once' Leads Sound Editors' Golden Reel Nominations". The Hollywood Reporter. Archived from the original on 9 January 2023 . Retrieved 9 January 2023. She worked for a very rich family — she started as a teenager, when she was 16 or 17, because sometimes that’s how early we start working,” De Leon says.” “And the son had a relationship with her, without the knowledge of his parents. She got pregnant, and of course, she knew she couldn’t keep the baby. So she left the household.” This is a prime example of a movie that has clear ambitions yet misses the mark spectacularly. The best word that can describe Triangle of Sadness is "snooty." From director Ruben Ostlund, it's a movie that thinks it has something new and important to say, when everything in it has already been said. It is also technically a dark comedy, but it's as funny as having nothing to do on an island. The only thing remotely funny in this movie was the scene with the hand grenade. That makes sense in context. It has a weird way of alternating between being ridiculously over the top and annoyingly ambiguous. The famed sinking scene where people vomit is the worst example of the former. Nobody needs to see a naked old man having diarrhea and vomiting on screen at the same time. It hits you over the head with its messages, and leaves the actual movie in the margins. The worst part is the ending, which doubles down on this. It's completely open-ended, without any hint of resolution.

For long stretches of that scene, as the couple argue on the ride home and in the hotel lift, it's as if Carl has made the compelling point about his relative disadvantage as a male model. Actually, that's not entirely fair, because although Östlund makes his points with unapologetic frankness, the Swedish writer-director's first English-language film shows that he is still capable of quietly uncomfortable, penetrating social comedy. This is what we get in the opening scenes, when the film appears to be a straightforward lampoon of the fashion industry. In advertising shoots, notes Östlund, the more expensive the brand, the more grumpy the models have to pretend to be. As for the title, the "triangle of sadness" is the term given to the frown lines between your eyebrows. Zilko, Christian (7 January 2023). Verhoeven, Beatrice (14 December 2022). " Everything Everywhere All At Once Leads 2023 Critics Choice Awards Film Nominations". The Hollywood Reporter. Archived from the original on 14 December 2022 . Retrieved 14 December 2022. Triangle of Sadness is outstanding. My only complaints are minor, including a few character moments that don't make sense -- and can't really be explained away by in-text stupidity -- as well as exactly one CGI donkey that doesn't look great. Still, this is the best time I've had in a movie theater in a long time, as is so often the case when the attendees are offered puke bags and at least one viewer is forced to leave the auditorium for some air.
