For sinking tips or full sinking fly lines I'd shorten my leader right down to as little as 3ft with a very heavy 'type 7' (or heavier) tip or to a 4ft to 5ft leader length with a regular 'type 3' tip as again you don't want your sink tip down and the salmon fly riding higher which it will do with a longer leader. Keeping different leader weight material coiled up in your fly box is wise so you know you've always got spares if you lose your leader as forgetting a leader spool is easy but its unnecessary to carry the entire leader spools about with you. A few neatly coiled spare leaders of varying breaking strains sit perfectly and look at home in any fly box. Choosing Which Sink Tip To Use I have asked WUF for their observations on this and whether or not they will make representation to the EA on behalf of the angling community, not that hopeful of any action from them judging by past history but somebody has to represent the river users !!

I rarely fish Barvas, but still do a bit on Garynahine. I spend more time out in the dead of night looking after fish on the island nowadays. Drop by and have a chat, maybe have a cast with the latest S-glass rods (perfect for huge predators or delicate dry-fly presentations)? Or just cuddle up with a carp & chill out with some awesome fishing movies😎 If a person puts the time in and learns the craft of catching salmon by reading the river, learning about the way nature works and understanding about rises and falls in both river level and temperature then massive respect to them. Ross probably like many other fisheries has its one season fly by nights who take a permit expecting the salmon to come to them but we have lost some committed salmon anglers who for one reason or another have decided to throw in the towel on the Wye. This is a seldom openly discussed but important part of salmon fly fishing set up so here's my own analysis of the facts as far as I see it on weight and length of salmon leaders, sink tips and which leader material will never let you down. Are Salmon Leader Shy?

A Bar Of Silver

I didn't fish again in North Uist, but we did have a great time before heading down to Benbecula, no fishing here either, but some great Seafood and some of the best sandcastles ever built. I have never been one for just reading a report on the internet, jumping in the car and heading to somewhere to try and catch a fish. For me it’s putting all the pieces in place and then when the take occurs I know I can say that I have mastered the art. Happy New Year to everyone, let's hope that this year we have perhaps something, anything, to shout about. The World Salmon Forum is designed to bring together wild salmon conservation groups from around the world to share new policies and measures that will provide for the survival of these magnificent animals. Funny you mention the Finn. I was just thinking about a wee man this morning and I can't remember his name. This would have been the anniversary of seeing him at the Faughan every year. He fished the Finn hard till it closed on the 15th September, then he'd appear at the Faughan for the rest of the season. A damned good angler he was too and really nice chap. He must have had some tally of Salmon at the end of every season.

Boat Angling - everything welcome. The opinions expressed here are those of the private individuals, and we accept no responsibility or liability. Were very proud to announce that Carp Champions - The Home of Fly-Fishing for Wild Carp have been invited to host a stand at Moy Country Fair 2023 this coming Friday and Saturday. So I’d still like to say the Dovey but from what I can gather and have noticed for the past five years is that the river Spey has so many large accidentally caught sea trout from May onwards and still seems to have good night fishing in June for those who still take a week on Grantown, that I’m inclined to think it may be the Spey. Of the rivers I’ve fished, the Dovey is probably my favourite for classic night fishing. Proper big holding pools on the lower river and well managed and run fishery. Ross Angling Club currently have a few rods available for salmon anglers at a cost considerably lower than many beats on the Wye. Ross beats are at the bottom end of the Wye just above Goodrich Court are as good as any other beat on the lower River especially as a spring fishery. Ross waters are often amongst the first to produce fish and anglers can fish every day of the week and are not limited to one day.The Yorkshire Esk is a river known for its sea trout and has the same run of large fish that you can expect on the Wear and other East Coast rivers. And yet the Angling reports from that river have usually been about fish caught on the mepps as I believe that river has a muddy colour that only in really low water has the clarity to fish the fly at night. The answer to both was - I genuinely don't know I shared this with some friends and in part the reason why I found them so hard to answer is that every fish is memorable, every day a treasure, every trip a journey into the unknown. I'll only know the answers when I hang my rods up for good, which I hope is many, many seasons from now. Interesting letter from Welsh Water received by some homes in Ross recently advising of details of road closures in the town. This they advise is ‘to replace a number of existing manholes with sealed manholes to help prevent surface water from entering the sewer system during heavy rain.’ No doubt there is a multitude of factors... predators, forestation, road run off, pollution and over fishing at sea and dont get me started on 'Fish Farms"... the list goes on and on!

Truth is though, that even when I started about 20 yrs ago when the runs of salmon and sea trout were out of this world, it was never an easy river to fish but so long as I know the fish are there, blanking for nights on end has never bothered me as I consider it my fault for not solving the puzzle. Although I've previously designed excellent 'elegantly flying' Spey lines that were purposely built for turning over heavy & long sink tips of different sink densities I do have my own personal sink tip favourite that I used to fish with all year round on the deeper River Tay. That special friend is a braided core type 3 (brown) tapered tip in a 15ft length. This tip works a treat with a longish rod in the cold Spring water when you're primarily searching the slower moving water with slow fly presentation targeted at 2 ft down into the water column. In the warmer water of Summer where you're primarily looking to the faster, often shallower and better oxygenated streamy water for salmon to be in it also works a treat assuming you're able to dictate the depth and speed of your fly by mending or extended rod angle positions through the fly's swing (or both). This tip is fine on the deeper River Tay as is its big brother (Type 7) but you'd unlikely get away with these on the shallower Scottish rivers like the Dee or the Spey where you'd mainly need to be on the intermediate (Type 1.5) sink tip equivalent unless faced with a deep pool situation. It is very difficult to measure angling effort. We got a signing in book at the Hut and members can text or leave me messages but some of them either forget or can't be bothered and I find myself noting whose car is there as I drive by or meet anglers on the bank to get a better idea of rod effort. Traditional Irish salmon flies, commissioned one hundred and twenty years ago for the Cork International Exhibition in 1902, are set to feature in a new historical picture book to mark ‘World Book Day’. If this keeps repeating year in and out then the majority of fishing is going to be lost as these dry years have a huge impact on the aquatic life that forms part of the food chain for many other creatures.
