Description

The information on housing, people, culture, employment and education that is displayed about Refectory Road, Falmer, Brighton, BN1 9BU is based on the last census performed in the UK in 2021. For any scheduled deliveries for Northfield Lane and the north end of Refectory Road, please instead arrange for delivery to Bramber House and arrange collection for the same day. Along Refectory Road, work is underway to ensure our utilities under the ground are sufficient to support both West Slope and the existing campus. We currently have the following road closures and diversions planned: This is done to preserve the anonymity of the people in that area, as some postcodes cover a very small area, sometimes a single building. The Science Park Road bus stop (by Pavilion Road, up to the Falmer Sports Complex) has now reopened for use.

Access to Bramber House for staff is only from the entrances on the East/Refectory Road side of the building and an access card is required; This means that to access Northfield and Lewes Court, drivers now need to use East Slope Road. Limited vehicle access to Refectory Road is in place, to manage traffic in this busy area. Signage will be present to indicate these road changes. Ongoing: single-lane closure for works on the Southern Ring Road; works are now progressing around the corner toward the Cooperative Childcare Centre and the Freeman building There will also be an overtime ban from Friday 1 to Saturday 9 December inclusive, which will impact service availability. On Tuesday 13 June between 8am and 6pm, part of Refectory Road will be closed whilst cabling is installed as part of our work to prepare campus for our West Slope development.Colleagues based onfloor 4are still able to work as usual, as are those in the Northern section of the building on the first and second floors (Student Services and Housing). All other colleagues have been temporarily relocated to other buildings on campus, or are working remotely. The Bramber House bus stop will also be closed during this period, and the East Slope Road bus stop has reopened. East Slope Road is now open, while Refectory Road is closed (at one end, by the Student Centre) and is now access only. Refectory Road will be closed until Spring 2024 to undertake essential preparation works for the West Slope development.

Week commencing Monday 27 June, Refectory Road will be closed between the corner or Lancaster House Road to the traffic lights at the base of the East Slope Road. To reach the north of campus (Lewes Court and Northfields), please drive via East Slope Road. The Co-Op has reopened after a temporary closure – access to the Co-Op is currently via the Refectory Road entrance only; Roadworks are taking place in two locations, impacting North South Road and the Eastern Ring Road. The Falmer Sports Complex bus stop is suspended until further notice. Work to prepare our campus for our new West Slope development is underway. Work is continuing around Lewes Court residences, Northfields residences and at the top of Norwich House Road as we move services out of the West Slope area and start to prepare utilities that can support the new development and our existing buildings. A full risk assessment of Bramber House has been conducted to ensure safe occupancy and evacuation can be maintained duringthis stage of remedial works. Staff onfloor 4should follow evacuation procedures as usual, and staff on all other levels should evacuate using the fire escape routes on Rectory Road side of the building. The census collection is designed so that each group of postcodes should contain at least 100 people (50 in Scotland). Kelly Coate, Pro Vice-Chancellor for Education and Students, wrote to all taught students earlier today. You can read the full message below: You may be aware of a situation that has developed this week that affects those working in and visiting Bramber House, including the Co-Op, which has reopened after a temporary closure. The concrete that was used to build Bramber House has been identified as having weaknesses, and as such work needs to be undertaken to partition off the stairwells along the West side (Arts Path) side of the building while surveys are undertaken which will inform what remedial works are needed.

The pedestrian crossing directly outside the Student Centre will be closed, but all other pedestrian routes will be maintained. Eat Central is open as usual, though access is only via the entrance from the terrace/seating area adjoining Arts Path.Over time there will be more services and activities being delivered from the Centre, so come September you will see even more activities that you may want to get involved with. We’ll keep you up-to-date on these developments through our regular communications and on the Student Hub. Throughout these works, buses will be diverted down East Slope Road and there will be pedestrian diversions along Refectory Road. Access to the Co-Op lobby is currently via the Refectory Road entrance only; the entrances from the Arts Path (South West) side is closed; Works to build a partition around the stairwell in the Co-Op lobby was prioritised meaning that the Co-Op has been able to reopen. Works in the building continue.
