Dorry Carr is six he and his sister Johnnie are very close and like to do everything together. Dorry is a boy, but can seem a bit like a girl. What Katy Did has been compared numerous times to Little Women. I would like to clarify: What Katy Did is totally inferior to Little Women.

Finishing the novel was exciting and surprising. I was not expecting the contents of the Epilogue and this reflects the plot in its entirety. The twists and turns added to the mystery that we are all trying to find answers to, and the further questions about the Summer Ball, also meant that I was constantly trying to read further into the motives of different characters. Set in c. 1868 in a tiny town in West America, this story is a mixture of happy home life + a coming-of-age/internal-journey story. The writing style is a sort of cross between Louisa Alcott and Frances Hodgson Burnett. The first half sets the stage of Katy’s life as a thoughtless but well-meaning child, and then the next half chronicles her change after a terrible accident. It isn’t preachy; and people may find the spiritual change very sudden, but honestly I find it’s just the right pace. It’s sweet and funny and realistic and heart-warming and oh-so-full of great messages and truths! There is some mention of Santa Claus & a few mentions of fairies, but that can be changes/skipped. The basic theme is that illness can be used in so many great ways to help others and ourselves. There’s also smaller themes of how to manage a house, how to be a good sister, and how to make a difference. But there is a specialness that comes from holding a story and knowing that you can step in or out of it, whenever you wish. The style of writing is sadly dated, and it is doubtful whether many youngsters would enjoy this out of context although an explanation of the different times might help. I would definitely advise skipping the various poems included, which characters apparently wrote. Six college friends gather for a reunion 25 years later. When one of the women stumbles inside after being raped, it puts relationships to the test and challenges who can be trusted. Rape. Affairs. Domestic abuse. This novel covers a range of sensitive issues but does so in a manner that does not make the reader feel uncomfortable. Instead, McGowan creates a thrilling, pulsating read that establishes a world that is becoming increasingly claustrophobic for the protagonist, Ali.

Are you getting all this? The book wasn't even that long. Certainly not long enough to cover all this ground. I wish the whole book had ONLY centered on whether the husband was guilty or innocent because it is a great premise and the beginning of this book was quite strong. What Katy Did was followed by four sequels: What Katy Did at School in which Katy and Clover attend the fictional Hillsover School (set in Hanover, New Hampshire); What Katy Did Next, in which a new friend of Katy's takes her on a once-in-a-lifetime trip to Europe; Clover, in which Katy is married and Clover accompanies her brother Phil to Colorado after he falls ill; and In the High Valley, which shows the lives of a handful of young people living in the High Valley in Colorado, including Clover, Elsie and their husbands. Switching Time: A Doctor's Harrowing Story of Treating a Woman with 17 Personalities by: Richard Baer I made notations throughout this on my Kindle on what I believed was happening and how one particular puzzle might reveal itself and I was wrong every time, of course. Nothing new there. What it must be to have an imagination....hehehe...... Didbook can be accessed from school or homein exactly the same way.We would strongly encourage pupils to be updating their Didbook at home, and where possible, discussing their input with you. Hopefully, putting entries in their Didbook will become second nature over time.Written in 1872 and set in Ohio, "What Katy Did" follows the Carr family. Katy and her siblings are not exactly 'purposefully' bad, but they certainly don't stop to think about their actions either. That is, until one day something happens and everyone, though particularly Katy, learn the value of obedience, even in the littlest of requests. stars & 8/10 hearts. I was given this book between 10-13 years old and loved it right away. Since then, I have only loved it more and more each read through! Try not to laugh at how badly written this book is and try to concentrate on the message it contains. DID is a normal consequence of a child living in unsurvivable conditions. We lived and are still considered sane which would not have happened if we had not formed this condition.

Reader Comment: "It is extremely detailed and really helps to sort all of this out in a clear manner." What Katie Did" is the name of a song by the Libertines that may have been inspired by the book. The lyrics refer to the characters, e.g. "Hurry up Mrs. Brown". The group Babyshambles later released a song entitled "What Katy Did Next". Both were written by Libertines and Babyshambles frontman Pete Doherty. This was such a happy, delightful book. I am going to keep this really short, not because I didn't like the book, but there awaits my challenge. In 2015, author Jacqueline Wilson wrote her novel Katy, which is a modern retelling of What Katy Did; in 2018, the Wilson novel was adapted into the CBBC TV series Katy. The August 2016 edition of Storytime featured a new illustrated adaptation with illustrations by Italian artist Marco Guadalupi.I found the novel fast paced with ever changing events. New revelations come out as the story develops that are hidden affairs, illegitimate children and even murder during and since the good old college days. An excellent read for sure. Mostly I didn't enjoy the chaos of being inside our main character's head, as hit after hit pounded down on Ali's oddly uptight life: accusations of rape, confessions of adultery, financial issues, a murder attempt, a suicide attempt, terminations of life-long friendships. Writers from Northern Ireland have difficulty getting away from the expectation that their novels will always center on the history, the sectarianism and connections to the Troubles. The novelist David Park has written 11 novels and only recently has he been able to write novels that don't have the Troubles somewhere in there. But McGowan chose to move to very foreign territory - wealthy Oxford graduates, living outside of and in London. Writers certainly can write about people and places that aren't their own, but they have to develop believable characters and settings.
