Description

The Egyptians (the author says) perceived the future as being behind them and the past ahead of them, and this is why they buried their kings for eternity.

The second, set at the turn of the 21st century, concerns twenty-year-old Teresa Guerrero, an Italian university student come to Berlin on a grant to work as scientific assistant at the state university’s installation of a Tutankhamen exhibit. The other story has an Italian woman named Teresa getting the opportunity of a lifetime to help an exhibition in Berlin of the Tutankhamen’s treasures in 2001. The muted color palleted and movement lines appropriately engage the written story, and I’d say if this was replaced by a different art style I may not have enjoyed the reading experience as much. Selten habe ich eine so schöne Graphic Novel gelesen - am liebsten würde ich mir jeden zweiten Frame in Postergröße ausdrucken und an die Wand hängen, thank you very much.I usually find that a story would have benefitted from being shorter/more cut down, but this one I think could have benefitted from being longer to allow a little more breathing room for ideas to grow. Given this is really a woman’s journey of self discovery, I found the exploration of Teresa and Ruben’s relationship to be somewhat lacking. It seems to be a rumination on the connection between the past and the future -- the latter symbolized by the 9/11 attack, which ends the book. While much of the story follows the romantic relationship between Teresa and Ruben, I found the relationship a distraction against the story's clear initial structure (much as Ruben is to Teresa's life), but not quite in a way that is complimentary.

Thus the story finds itself a reflection on that which is clear and direct and that which is abstract and perceptual. In 2001, Teresa is fresh off the plane in Berlin, ready to start what is, for her, the opportunity of a lifetime—an assistantship working on an exhibition of the treasures in that tomb. Asides from the plot synopsis of the novel, the story itself doesn't mention that it's set in the year 2001 at all. I would recommend this graphic novel for its: thoughtfulness, novel structure, heavy realism toward both romantic relationships and living abroad, and of course for it's well-executed illustrations.

But it really threw me out of the story every time it happened and I sat there trying to remember what a word meant in German.

In places, especially in the wider shots of scenes set in Egypt, the art is like fresh watercolors; elsewhere, it tends to be a bit simpler. If the processing is for other purposes, you have the right to object only if there are reasons arising from your particular situation.

With the graphic novel Cinquemila chilometri al secondo (Coconino press, 2010) he won the Fauve d’Or award at the Angoulême Festival 2011. This is a Berlin that doesn't fully exist anymore—where the squatters haven't been evicted, and you can tell the former East and West Berlin by the smell of coal, and war-torn (and Soviet) buildings are still being torn down and rebuilt. Teresa meets Ruben, but he may not offer her the stability she needs as her insomnia frays her fragile mind. Finance is provided by PayPal Credit (a trading name of PayPal UK Ltd, Whittaker House, Whittaker Avenue, Richmond-Upon-Thames, Surrey, United Kingdom, TW9 1EH). Overall, I would say that I liked this graphic novel but would have preferred a lesser focus on the relationship, and a greater exploration of Teressa's coming-of-age narrative running parallel with the historical ones.
