I think that the plot had them (the leads) too focused on talking about politics, conspiracy theories, and figuring out who their enemies were that not much of their wit, charm, sense of humor, and true personality shone through. It’s a giant fantasy world with a lot of key players and you’re never quite sure of who you can trust. She's been sent on a mission, and she's suddenly in unfamiliar territory surrounded by immense power.

I also in general love books that take place in parallel worlds as it gives the excuse for contemporary writing and language to infiltrate fantasy in an easy and natural way that makes it not feel out of place.
