Would recommend for anyone who has an interest in Tolkien’s Mythology and Cosmology or just the films and books in general! But that aside, I went to pick up the book and immediately realized something was wrong, it was very small. Third, the translation "Region(s) of Everlasting Cold" is entirely unattested and appears to be Fonstad's own invention.

It is telling that there is very little new material here, all of the illustrations and maps are found elsewhere, making this redundant for people unfortunate enough to own a copy of his Illustrated Encyclopedia. It’s full of detailed and beautiful illustrations about the world of Tolkien, made by many artists through out the years. While the year 2020, saw the publication of a special edition of his Tolkien Illustrated Guides Boxed Set (of 6) in the Word Cloud Classics series.

Though sometimes the information doesn't quite add up--like who the Ringwraiths are (the Silmarillion says at least three were Numenorean), it's still very helpful. Here, Day's information is concise and to the point, giving us a history and overview of Middle Earth that makes it easy to follow and understand, lots of the text just being one to a few pages on each topic and location, and I found it very fun and interesting to read. In 1986, his children's novel, The Emperor's Panda was nominated for the Governor General's Award and the National Library Award, and was adapted for stage by the Toronto Young People's Theatre. I think this is a light-hearted book to dip into, but, if you're a die-hard Tolkien fan like me, then don't expect too much from it. We don’t share your credit card details with third-party sellers, and we don’t sell your information to others.

Obviously most known for his Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit Middle-Earth books, he’s written lots of other scholar pieces on English and British literature and folklore. The books featured on this site are aimed primarily at readers aged 13 or above and therefore you must be 13 years or over to sign up to our newsletter. At the same time, these overviews also offer an extended, informative background on the LOTR books/ films. As I mentioned, the binding is a thick leather, or more likely imitation leather, with embossment for the title and author. The Atlas of Tolkien's Middle-earth is an essential guide to the geography of Middle-earth, from its founding in the Elder Days - as recounted in The Silmarillion - to the Third Age of The Lord of the Rings, including the journeys of Bilbo, Frodo and the Fellowship of the Ring.Stentor Danielson, a Tolkien scholar, notes that Tolkien did not provide the same "detailed textual history" to contextualise his maps as he did for his writings. A gorgeous faux leather volume full of exquisite sketches and colourful illustrations of Middle-earth - ideal for the true Tolkien fan. It gets really interesting when it comes to additional information such as the names of the cities and the (wild) animals of Middle-Earth.
