My only real design/hardware complaint is that they come with only one long 3m cable. I’d happily use the Shure SRH840A as general-use headphones, but they’re not made for that job.

The overall feel of the headset is one of corner cutting compared with last gen, plastics feel and look cheaper and they dont look like they will last nearly as long as my old ones have. The earpieces rotate and the hinges seem flimsy and would probably break if they fell onto anything other that carpeted floor. The cable isnt as premium as the old coiled one but is serviceable I suppose. Comfort is not as good as the last gen not terrible but still feels more clampy on the head but maybe more time to wear in will help with that. But are they as comfortable? The Shure SRH840A have large oval-shaped pads that offer enough room to fit my moderately sized ears without any pinching. I’ve worn these headphones for up to six hours at a time without any obvious fatigue. Bass is measured and punchy. It’s far more reserved than the consumer standard, which may take a while to bed into if you’re accustomed to the mainstream tuning of, say, a Sony or Bose pair. However, depth is solid. Sub-bass isn’t particularly strong, with the real action starting around 55Hz. Shure’s ultra-wide 5-25000Hz frequency coverage claim was always going to turn out optimistic, given it goes well beyond the upper and lower bounds of human hearing. We’d file the SRH840As' design as ‘classy but conservative’. That gold lettering/stitching certainly adds a touch of exclusivity, and the overall feel and level of build quality is better than you'd get at the entry-level.ALL IMPLIED WARRANTIES OF MERCHANTABILITY OR FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE ARE HEREBY DISCLAIMED TO THE EXTENT PERMITTED UNDER APPLICABLE LAWS AND, TO THE EXTENT NOT PERMITTED, ARE HEREBY LIMITED TO THE DURATION AND TERMS OF THIS WARRANTY. SHURE ALSO HEREBY DISCLAIMS ALL LIABILITY FOR INCIDENTAL, SPECIAL, OR CONSEQUENTIAL DAMAGES. But I didnt like the clamping pressure, and I found the 4100Hz dip to be real (not just shown in measurements). The depth of the ear pads is the same 18-19 mm, but you can insert a wire or balcony insulation there, this will increase the internal depth and the speaker will not touch the ear, this will not affect the sound much, the stage and body of the sound will increase. Looks like they have an entirely redesigned build and comfort, which is great news for those familiar with the old pairs (especially the 440). Also, no more coiled cable! In my very brief experience with the originals they were both surprisingly listenable. They were a slight letdown on build and comfort so alas I never owned either pair myself.

The Shure SRH840A are home studio-grade “professional” monitoring headphones. They’re the follow-up to the minor classic SRH840, which I reviewed a decade ago. Alongside the cable, you get a 6.3mm adapter and a no-frills shiny synthetic leather carry case in the box. The old SRH840 even included a spare set of pads, but you don’t get those this time.Bass extension isnt as deep as on the 371, but still very good and ofc by far better than on my 271. These are comfortable cans, too - light enough for you to wear for long periods at a time, but not so featherweight that you’ll forget you’ve got them on. The leather-style earpads sit nicely on your ears without too much pressure - they swivel, giving you a bit of extra flexbility - and the band has plenty of cushioning when you’re in it for the long haul. I play the guitar in them, the guitar in them sounds dense, full-bodied and angry, like a real pumped-up tube amp. I like it!

What is immediately noticeable about the Shure SRH840A is that the cable routing running over the headband is no longer partly visible from the outside, as was the case with its predecessor. The cables have been routed inwards so that there is no longer a weak point. In addition, the 80’s look of the old headphone model is history. Unfortunately, the SRH840A are no longer foldable, as the SRH840 was. But at least its ear cups can be rotated 90 degrees so that the headphones can be stored flat in the carrying pouch. In general, this is the sound of the 840, perhaps it differs in some way, but there is definitely no way to compare. New drivers and new acoustic characteristics. The design is more strict and modern. The headband is reinforced with metal (increased strength). A straight cable is included (a twisted cable is available optionally). It is possible to connect a cable with a headset (available optionally). The comfort is great. Good padding on the right places, covers the entire ear and very lightweight construction. The sound quality is perfect for my amateur purposes. I use it as a monitor set for playing bass guitar, midi instruments and vocals. Some states do not allow limitations on how long an implied warranty lasts, or the exclusion or limitation of incidental or consequential damages, so the above limitation may not apply to you. This warranty gives you specific legal rights, and you may have other rights which vary from state to state. The cord is of high quality and it’s good that it’s straight. But it is oak and has a microphonic effect, transmitting rustles, touches and blows well. The headband is breathable, the clamping force moderate – and while the cup pads are quite firm, they’re comfy enough. I wouldn’t call the fit luxurious, but it’s comparable with other studio-style headphones I’ve used. Note that the cups swivel by 90 degrees, too. Sound Quality In addition to the Shure SRH840A, an interchangeable cable, a 6.35 mm screw adapter and a carrying pouch are also included in the box. Compared to the SRH840, the SRH840A has a much more contemporary appearance. Even though the trim here is no longer silver-coloured but gold. The new colours reflect the quality that is continued in the headband. As with the previous model, the underside of the headband is made of fabric and the top of imitation leather. On the SRH840A, however, the imitation leather has gold-coloured stitching. In addition, all of the headphones’ visible screws are gold. Technology and values of the Shure SRH840A
