Description

We all consider we know something about people and why they behave as they do, and so there’s a sense in which we’re all Psychologists. Inhibition Control: Children’s inhibition control was measured using the Children’s Stroop task which consisted of 20 trials [ 44]. This adaptation requires children to respond to cards with night-time scenes (stars and moon) with the word “day” and to respond to cards with a daytime picture (the sun) with the word “night”. Inhibition was measured based on the number of correct responses given. Attention’ is really an umbrella term for a number of processes and abilities. These include the ability to focus attention on a single aspect of the environment or activity (voluntary attentional vigilance) at one extreme, and automatic, uncontrollable responses to unusual or unexpected events (involuntary attentional capture) at the other. Both may have evolved to aid the survival of the human species

Although anatomical sex is universal, gender, which refers to all the duties, rights, and behaviors a culture considers appropriate for males and females, is a social invention. Cognitive development occurs through the interaction between innate capacities and environmental events. It progresses through a series of hierarchical, invariant and universal stages: the sensorimotor, pre-operational, concrete operational, and formal operational. Research doesn’t appear out of nowhere and what particular Psychologists investigate isn’t a random event.

Summary

According to Rosenberg and Hovland (1960), attitudes are ‘predispositions to respond to some class of stimuli with certain classes of response’. An attitude is an evaluative disposition toward some object. It’s an evaluation of something or someone along a continuum of like-to-dislike or favorable-to-unfavorable…

However different they may be in other respects, most personality theories share the basic assumption that personality is something that ‘belongs’ to the individual: ‘the appropriate unit of analysis for personality psychology is the person.' Perception is the ‘added value’ that the organized brain gives to raw sensory data; it goes way beyond the ‘palette of sensations’ and involves memory, past experience, and higher-level processing. At a behavioral level, the relationships between gross motor skills and executive function can be explained [ 50, 51]. Regular physical activity necessitates and trains gross motor skills and executive processes, as goal-directed conduct is required during various sports and other physical activities. These activities help children adapt to a constantly changing environment. Thus, participation in physical activities not only improves gross motor skills but also helps to enhance executive function [ 20]. This is compatible with other studies which have found that high competencies in gross motor skills are associated with high performance on specific executive function tasks [ 14, 15, 16]. The relationship between gross motor skills and executive function can also be explained through a neuropsychological framework which proposes that there are overlaps in neural networks that are crucial for both gross motor skills and executive function. It is suggested that the cerebellum, dorsolateral prefrontal cortex, and connective structures (including the basal ganglia) all have a role in motor and cognitive activities, making the brain regions co-activated. When one observes decreased dorsolateral prefrontal cortex activation, one also sees a concomitant decrease in cerebellar activation. The activation of these regions is highly linked and intertwined [ 52, 53]. Indeed, the neural pathways that govern gross motor skills and executive function may overlap—particularly in children, where there is a higher degree of brain plasticity, which concluding the caudate pathway of the basal ganglia, sensory-motor cortex etc., particularly when cognitive control of motor activity is considered. These studies support a high correlation based on neurological evidence [ 32, 33]. As with all new editions, the content has been thoroughly updated and revised, but there is more new material in this 8 th edition compared with earlier ones. This has resulted in substantial re-writing and reorganising of certain chapters, including Chapters 6, 10, 18, 20, 29, 36, and 44. A small number have changed very little. One or two of the ‘Meet the Researcher’ features have been removed, many have been updated and some have stayed the same. In the broadest sense, learning is the acquisition of knowledge and memory is the storage of an internal representation of that knowledge …

What is also certain is that differences among children in the nature of their relationships with others can have profound implications for the particular developmental path that each child embarks upon ... Motivation refers, in a general sense, to processes involved in the initiation, direction, and energization of individual behavior… An attitude is a mental and neural state of readiness, organized through experience, exerting a directive or dynamic influence upon the individual’s response to all objects and situations with which it is related.

While there is a vast amount of topics covered, they can be broadly categorized in the history and development of psychology, the biological origins of behavior, cognitive psychology, social psychology, developmental psychology and individual differences. I liked that the book wasn't afraid to dive into more traditional psychoanalysis, and sometimes even temporarily crossing over to philosophy. It's a fading trend in psychology, but quite unfortunate as it contains tremendous wisdom. The APA style, created by the American Psychological Association, is used by writers around the world for writing and publishing in the Social and Behavioural Sciences. APA is an author-date style similar to the Harvard style, but with its own characteristics in terms of formatting, spelling, construction of tables and graphs. It can also contain footnotes which allows authors to include additional information. Whenever you quote another person's words or specifically refer to their work you must cite the author's surname and the year of publication. For example: Emotion Recognition: Our measure of emotion recognition involved tasks compiled by Bierman and colleagues [ 47], including emotion matching and emotion identification. Emotion matching involves giving the child four emoticons (happy, angry, sad, and afraid), allowing the child name the target emotion picture (e.g.,: the one test to present a happy picture to the child, and to allow the child to answer this expression); if the child correctly matched the corresponding emotion meter 2 points, the match error meter 0 points. Emotion identification refers to allowing young children to identify the target emotion image from the given emotion picture (e.g.,: the main test simultaneously presents four emotion pictures to the child, respectively, saying “happy, angry, sad, afraid”, so that the child from the four pictures given to point out the corresponding picture), if the child can be identified meter 1 point, identify the error or not to identify meter 0 points. The points gained from these two tests are added to reveal the recognition score.
