Andrea Mullaney of The Scotsman, praised the efforts made by BSkyB in the production and casting, but added "it's a shame that our best actors can't be used for anything more radical or real." [9] Adam Sweeting of The Arts Desk wrote a more scathing review, commenting; "Despite the hype, it's just another cop show full of corpses, but Morrissey feels authentic as the phlegmatic, low-key Thorne". He also criticised the romantic link between Morrissey and McElhone, writing; "It was like Vinnie Jones getting off with Joanna Lumley". [10] Cast [ edit ] And when he finally took up the pen, this time with the intention of producing crime novels, Mark found that doing standup comedy was no different from writing fiction; indeed, the experience he gained from doing standup eventually contributed to his ability to tell such riveting stories. The next book by Mark Billingham is The Wrong Hands and will be released on May, 23rd 2024. It is the newest book in the Detective Miller Series. This switch to stand-up and comedy roles led Mark Billingham to turn his hand to script writing, where he had success with programmes such as Harry’s Mad and Knight School. However, it wasn’t where his heart truly was due to interference from other people turning his scripts into something he wasn’t happy with. This led to Billingham turning to novel writing. The Killing Habit – While DI Nicola Tanner investigates the deadly spread of a dangerous new drug, Tom Thorne is handed a case that he doesn’t take too seriously until a spate of animal killings points to the work of a serial killer. When the two cases come together in a way that neither could have foreseen, both Thorne and Tanner must risk everything to catch two very different killers.Billingham became the first crime writer to win the Theakston's Old Peculier Crime Novel of the Year Award twice when his novel Death Message won in 2009, [10] against Reginald Hill, Val McDermid, Ian Rankin and Lee Child. He knew from bitter experience that some of them might one day be his to hunt down. Some would think nothing of hurting a child. Some would wound, rape or kill to get whatever it was they needed. People also rave about the “ Logan McRae” series by Stuart McBride. This series explores the life of a detective sergeant in Aberdeen, Scotland by the names of Logan McRae who just wants to do what is right for his community. However, solving murders and crimes in Aberdeen isn’t without its pitfalls. Tom Thorne FAQs The two basically share a birthday and have interest in music. When talking about the creation and development of his main character, the author notes the difficulty and worry which is involved in trying to create a personality different from those in other existing, popular and familiar works.

Most though, would know where to stop. They would draw a line round about the same place he did. Most would stop at cheating the tax man or driving home after a few drinks too many. Most would go no further than a raised voice or a bit of push and shove to blow away the cobwebs. Most had a threshold of acceptable behaviour; of pain and fury; of disgust at cruelty that was somewhere close to his own. After the publication of the first book in the Triskellion series, Billingham returned to Tom Thorne to write Bloodline, and then From the Dead, Good as Dead, The Dying Hours, The Bones Beneath, Time of Death and Die of Shame. Lazybones was the follow-up to Scaredy Cat, and the third book in the Tom Thorne series. After great commercial success, Lazybones was to be Billingham’s critical breakthrough, as it won him the 2004 Theakston’s Old Peculier Crime Novel of the Year Award. After Lazybones, the fourth book in the Tom Thorne series was published, The Burning Girl. That was followed by Lifeless and then Buried. The seventh book in the Tom Thorne series, Death Message, which was published in 2007, would win a second Theakston’s Old Peculier Crime Novel of the Year Award. Dancing Towards The Blade" in Men From Boys by John Harvey (ed.) ( Arrow Books, September 2004), ISBN 0-09-946152-8 Good As Dead – Police officer Helen Weeks walks into her local newsagents on her way to work. Little does she know that this simple daily ritual will change her life forever. As she waits innocently at the till, she comes face to face with a gunman. The crazed hostage-taker is desperate to know what really happened to his beloved son. By holding a police officer at gunpoint, he will force DI Tom Thorne to re-investigate his son’s death.

Cry Baby – A Prequel published in 2020 (after Their Little Secret). It’s 1996. Detective Sergeant Tom Thorne is a haunted man. Haunted by the moment he ignored his instinct about a suspect, by the horrific crime that followed, and by the memories that come day and night, in sunshine and shadow. So when seven-year-old Kieron Coyne goes missing while playing in the woods with his best friend, Thorne vows he will not make the same mistake again. Cannot. The solitary witness. The strange neighbor. The friendly teacher. All are in Thorne’s sights. In addition to his Tom Thorne series, Mark Billingham has also written other books, including several standalone thrillers, two out of which are being adapted for television by the BBC. While Mark Billingham hasn’t won any notable awards for his Tom Thorne series, Scaredy Cat and Lifeless, two Tom Thorne books, were nominated for a Dagger Award in 2002 and a BCA Crime Thriller of the Year Award in 2006 respectively. Tom Thorne Books into Movies Love Like Blood – DI Nicola Tanner needs Tom Thorne’s help. Her partner, Susan, has been brutally murdered and Tanner is convinced that it was a case of mistaken identity―that she was the real target. The murderer’s motive might have something to do with Tanner’s recent work on a string of cold-case honor killings she believes to be related. Tanner is now on compassionate leave but insists on pursuing the case off the books and knows Thorne is just the man to jump into the fire with her. This book is told from three points of view, namely: Thorne, the killer, and Alison. The story told here is designed to deliver in-depth character development and exploration.

Other contributors include: Laura Lippman • Lee Child • John Connolly • Lynda La Plante • John Harvey • Peter Robinson • Fidelis Morgan • Val McDermid • Karin Slaughter• Emma Donoghue• Denise Mina • Kelley Armstrong • Jane Haddam

Lazybones – It’s only 10 days since Douglas Remfry’s release from prison, having served seven years for rape, and now he’s dead: naked on a bare mattress in a grubby north London hotel room, his head hooded and his hands tied with a brown leather belt. And when a second sex offender is found dead, DI Tom Thorne knows he has a vigilante on his hands… The general theme of Scaredy Cat is really the power of fear, and that fear is a very powerful weapon, and if you are prepared to instil it, you have a very powerful weapon that is every bit as dangerous as a gun or a knife. Also what happened to me in that hotel room fed directly into a sub-plot in Scaredy Cat with some very nasty crimes carried out in hotel rooms. [3] Television adaptations [ edit ]

The Tom Thorne Series in Order (17 Books)

Billingham's novel Lazybones won the Theakston's Old Peculier Crime Novel of the Year Award 2004 and he won the same award in 2009 for his novel Death Message. [10] In The Dark was nominated for the Crime Writers Association Gold Dagger at the 2009 Crime Thriller Awards. [18] In 2011, Billingham was inducted into the ITV3 Crime Thriller Awards Hall of Fame. Billingham has received nominations and awards related to all aspects of his various careers. What's That Noise (which he wrote and presented) won the 1995 Royal Television Society award for "Best Entertainment Programme", [9] while Knight School was nominated for the RTS's "Best Children's Drama" award two years running. After three award-winning series, Billingham and Lloyd helped creator-writer Robinson with plot and script ideas and gained co-writer credits on the first episode of series 4, "Tunnel Vision". After graduating with a degree in drama from the Department of Drama and Theatre Arts, he helped form a socialist theatre company, Bread & Circuses, in Birmingham. Bread & Circuses toured with shows in schools, colleges, arts centres and the street. [3] In the mid-1980s he moved to London as a "jobbing actor", taking minor roles in episodes of TV shows Dempsey and Makepeace, Juliet Bravo, Boon, and The Bill. [2] [4] After playing a variety of "bad guy roles such as a soccer hooligan, drug addict, a nasty copper, a racist copper or a bent copper", he claimed that he had become disenchanted with acting and that the emphasis was not on talent, but on looks. [3] The Tom Thorne series was adapted into a television drama called Thorne that premiered in the United Kingdom on Sky1. Debuting in 2010, David Morrissey played the part of DI Tom Thorne in the show. Additional cast members included Natascha McElhone, Edie Marsan and Aidan Gillen.
