When the zombie apocalypse began, hospital workers told Negan to leave with them, but he refused to leave his dying wife's side. Unfortunately, Lucille passed away when the power went out, which stopped her life-support machine. Moments later, she turned into a zombie. Negan ran from the hospital and encountered a boy in trouble with zombies. He helped the boy by using a fire extinguisher to fight off the zombies. In return, Negan asked the boy to kill his reanimated wife, Lucille.

While we didn’t get much of an in-depth look at Negan during the season six finale of TWD, we did get a feel for Jeffrey Dean Morgan's interpretation of the character, (which I am personally thrilled with). He is also one of the two main antagonists who survived the end of the Comic Series, the other being Sebastian Milton. In the present-day, Negan speaks to the memory of his late wife while holding the newly rediscovered Lucille bat in front of a roaring fire in Leah’s cabin. “I’m sorry that I left you,” he says, before joking: “I hope you found someone in the afterlife and you are screwing your brains out.” Saying that he misses her and that he “loved the shit out of you”, he adds: “I am going to do your fighting for you.” He then burns Lucille the bat – has Negan turned a corner? Negan visits Sasha, a captive, and discovers one of his Saviors, David, attempting to rape her. He states that rape is against their rules and will not tolerate such behavior. David apologizes, but Negan rams a knife through his throat, stating he does not accept his apology. He then leaves Sasha with a choice: kill herself or kill David once he reanimates to show her willingness to work with him. This Louisville Slugger baseball bat would make an excellent custom “Lucille”, should you be so inclined.

Fast-forwarding again to the bar interrogation, the biker gang leader demands that Negan tells them where the doctors are. He gives in and circles where they are on a map, and the gang goes after them: Negan is later freed after his intel proves to be correct, leaving him consumed with guilt at selling the doctors out. He was planned to be killed in Issue 108. However, Robert Kirkman stated that he liked Negan "too much" to kill him off. So far, Negan has the longest lifespan out of any other main antagonist in the TV Series with a total of 33 episodes; surpassing the Governor, who had 22 episodes. As well as his dislike towards rape, Negan also dislikes killing people at random, which is never shown by any of the other main antagonists in the series, save for Chris and The Hunters. Negan really only wants to install fear in other people and tries to keep as many people alive as possible, hence why he called his group "The Saviors". Also, he is willing to spare anyone whom he sees as potentially useful and can be reasonable during negotiations, and he is a man of his word as he promises to help communities clear out walkers near their homes and will not destroy their communities, as long as they give him half of everything they have once a week. Also, while still a bad guy, Negan is the least evil of the three, because unlike The Governor, Negan does not really like killing people, he only kills to keep people in line, and he absolutely hates sexual violence (The Governor was a vicious rapist who raped Michonne multiple times). Plus, unlike Alpha who is a feral individual, Negan wants to rebuild civilization, and unlike Alpha, Negan does not kill children or pregnant women. And unlike Alpha, Negan hates rape and does not allow anyone in his group to rape anyone (Alpha allowed many of her male Whisperers to rape her own daughter, Lydia and other female Whisperers, numerous times because she believed that it would make them "stronger").

The bikers are now beating Franklin up in a bid to find out where “the good stuff is”. Outside the bar, a noticeably changed Negan clubs one of the bikers to death with Lucille and shoots another. A shoot-out ensues, allowing Franklin to free himself as Negan forces his way into the bar. Shoe now firmly on the other foot, Negan tells the now-restrained gang leader that he’s “got some stuff to get off my chest” and “this time, you best hope I never stop talking – cos when I do, something bad is going to happen”. Henry Rollins also auditioned for the role of Negan due to partially inspiring the character, but the role was eventually given to Jeffrey Dean Morgan. He was supposed to be killed by Maggie Greene in Issue 174, but Kirkman changed his mind while writing the issue. Negan is the second major primary antagonist in the Comic Series, the first being The Governor and the third being Alpha.

Who knew you could laugh with and kind of like someone who you know is about to bash in the brains of one or more of your favorite characters? Jumping ahead again to his chat with Franklin, Laura comes in with all the treatments Lucille requires and Negan is ecstatic (“What goes around, comes around,” Franklin says). Laura warns him, though, about a gang that “runs the roads” at night, and hands him the baseball bat she hit him with for protection – hello Lucille!
